Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

One thing no one will doubt is that Kerry Coombs is All-IN for Ohio State football. He bought in a long time ago and gets the kids he recruits to buy in also. As a DB coach he needs to be on the sidelines and let his energy permeate through the team and his players, but as a DC he should be in the box seeing what is going on. You can't do both. Even getting the info relayed by another coach, is not the same as seeing with your own eyes.

Keep him on the sidelines, as a DB coach and recruiter. Keep someone else calling the Defense in the booth that can run the Single High safety and the derivatives that are needed. As much angst as I have for the guy as the DC I don't dislike him a bit but I hate his Defensive calls. Eventually those feelings will be unified and I'd rather it be the positive with him not the DC.
Yeah, man. All you have to do is watch this video. I wish it was working better, because GODDAMN that's a guy you want to succeed.

No question that the guy is all about Ohio and Ohio State and has been living the dream and helping our DBs achieve the dream (See, Lattimore, M., CB-New Orleans Saints). No one can feel good about standing him down, but that’s what’s got to happen and if he’s honest, he knows it and will do it honorably.

The bolded is simply not so

There is a great deal of skepticism that goes unspoken around here simply because of fan-board etiquette

Those of us who were skeptical of Coombs as more than a recruiter kept our misgivings to ourselves for the most part. A lot of that is admittedly because we weren’t sure… but that’s a big part of the point here. There’s a great deal that a lot of us should be a lot less sure of than we are.

Just because only one side of an argument is vocal does not mean that the other side doesn’t have something to say

Often, the side that is silent has more to go on than the side that is vocal. There are many reasons why they might remain silent. Message board etiquette and uncertainty are just two of them

The following is something that I will mention only as an example of what I’m talking about…

I haven’t seen sufficient proof that Al Washington is a good linebacker coach. I’m not trying to start a conversation here, I won’t defend the statement because my opinion is only that there is not sufficient proof… throw stats at me if you like, throw names at me if you like… I consider none of it dispositive thus far. I’m only pointing out an example of what I’m talking about. A lot of you are eager to try Washington for a role that there is NO evidence that he can do, when there isn’t even enough evidence (to me) that he’s a glowing success at his current job.

Im sure the above is going to be a pretty unpopular opinion with a lot of you. Exactly the kind of thing that I usually keep to myself until there is sufficient evidence to make a definitive statement one way or the other.

There are a lot of things like that, not just for me, but for a lot of people on this board. Don’t assume that everyone agrees just because no one has said otherwise.

Edit: TL,DR version… what @RugbyBuck said
TL,DR... trust the coaches?

Just curious... along those same lines... was there evidence that Ryan Day could be a glowing success? Or is the jury still out on that one as well?

I'm not baiting here. I'm just saying if we pull the "silent majority" curtain back, who else gets exposed?

I'll take the bait... IMO jury is still out a very small amount but I'm personally a huge fan.

Only reason I say that is he had Justin Fields his first two seasons and in 2019 his defense was loaded with UFM recruits as was the 2020 team. Coach Day has 3 losses in 2 years which is awesome but this year will go a long way for him I think. For example if we drop 2+ more games what would people think? How would people feel if the wheels really fell off for example and we finish 9-4 overall?

I personally set aside 2019 because that team was loaded with talent which was all UFM and also 2020 we have to admit was a very brief season too which fell our way.

I wouldn't trade Ryan for anyone I just want to make that clear. However what happens this Saturday through the end of this season will go along way to either completely cement that or erode it. Because unfortunately this defense is not a great matchup for a number of teams this season.

The only thing I've been very concerned about since Ryan was hired was "what if he's another Mark Helfrich?". I don't think that's the case but myself personally I'm really intrigued how these next few games go and if the defense craps the bed again how does he handle that?

I have no idea what the proportions are because there’s no way of knowing

I did not claim there was a “silent majority” because I neither know nor care if it’s a majority

My point was that there was not unanimity on the other side. As to whether some people still haven’t decided about Day… I don’t know. If they’re not willing to voice their misgivings, who could possibly know?

There are hints though, I guess, now that we’re on the subject

This situation has brought up the discussion of whether Day is going to be willing to make hard decisions when it comes to his staff. People have discussed that openly, many have made the point that we don’t know how well he’ll handle it because he hasn’t had to yet

Considering the number of Buckeye fans I know personally who read Buckeye Planet compared to the number who post here, it seems safe to say that the vast majority are keeping their thoughts to themselves. This does not make them a silent majority; their silence means we can’t possibly know which side they’re on. And that is exactly the point of the original post.

We live in an age where people treat majority opinion as if it were evidence of something (or anything). Not only is majority opinion (even among the educated), meaningless, it is also unknowable. It is meaningless because there exists an objective reality that is in no way dependent on what anyone, including the majority, believes. It is unknowable because all “surveys” including even elections, have a built in bias because they are surveys of willing participants, and people’s reasons for not participating might be such that the vast majority of those who are unwilling to participate might have similar views, thus vastly skewing the results.

There is a way around this, of course. If you were able to get enough people to participate such that the number of non-participants could be added to the number who are in the minority and the sum would still be less than the majority.

The problem that leaves is that the majority is still meaningless. Majorities to the extent that we have known or guessed them, have been wrong many times in human history. Thinking that the people of today aren’t susceptible to that would be arrogant, but I’ve never asked people if they believe that because I honestly don’t care if they do or not.

In your last sentence you ask about who gets “exposed” if we pull the silent majority curtain back; I would hope that by now my answer to that is obvious. I don’t believe there is a practical way of pulling that curtain back, and even if we did, it would expose only what people believe. It would expose no one, because, as Dumbledore said of the Mirror of Erised, it (what the majority believes in this case) can give us neither knowledge nor truth

I have confidence in Day. Urban would not have handled this like Day, he would have handled it behind closed doors most likely if you listen to stories from players and ex-coaches, but he would not have made it public like Day did. Personally, I like Day's method better, if he indeed does handle behind closed doors too and makes changes. Urban seemed to not make changes during the season. Hopefully, Day follows through and we see a difference on the field. I think we will. The one problem I do have though, is anyone that knew anything about football could see this coming from Cleveland last year. The scheme didn't just become shit last Friday night. It was shit all last year. That is a little disappointing and is on Day.

I am not certain we don't have a good DC on the staff. Larry Johnson has been around the game for a long long time and coached under some great DC's. He has seen it all. Maybe he is the guy? At this point, that is where I would turn to if I were Day. The guy has to know defense at some level.

Just sitting here thinking - Tress won his NC with Coop's recruits - Fick had a losing season because he didn't have the best of Tress's recruits - Urbs went undefeated in large part because Fick held onto kids Tress and Fick recruited - Urbs won his NC with Fick as his DC - Day got two shots at an NC with Urbs recruits, his recruits, and Coombs recruits - Tress had to resign - Fick was given Mission Impossible and came within one barely overthrown pass of beating Michigan - Urbs was forced to resign because he put friendship over what was best for the team - I think Day knows that.

I much rather Day over how UFM handled poor performance. I like that he is not sugar coating it because what good does that do? One thing about UFM that drove me crazy was he always talked a tough game overall but when tough decisions needed to be made he sort of had trouble making them.
