Ohio State's defensive coordinator among 5 finalists for award

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock is 1 of 5 finalists for the Broyles Award, which given annually to the nation's top assistant college football coach.

Heacock's defense has allowed under 11 points per game this season and has held opponents to 3 & out on 48.5% of their possessions.

Other finalists announced today are Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen, Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Kansas defensive coordinator Bill Young and West Virginia offensive coordinator Calvin Magee.

Ohio State assistant wins Broyles award

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock, whose unit held opponents without a first down on nearly half of their possessions, won the Broyles Award on Tuesday, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach.

The Buckeyes, who will play LSU in the BCS championship game Jan. 7, allowed just under 11 points per game. Opponents went "three-and-out" on 48.5 percent of their possessions.

Other finalists for the award were Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen, West Virginia offensive coordinator Calvin Magee, Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and Kansas defensive coordinator Bill Young.
