CANTON, Ohio -- A former Ohio prep football player and University of Pittsburgh recruit has been convicted of killing a teenager outside a gas station in July.
Steven J. Walker, 20, of Canton, who was the starting quarterback for three seasons at Buchtel High School in Akron, was found guilty by a jury Tuesday of shooting 17-year-old Michael Cheek. The killing was gang-related, according to testimony in Stark County Common Pleas Court.
Walker was sentenced by Judge John G. Haas to 15 years to life for the murder, three years for using a firearm and six months for carrying a concealed weapon.
Before sentencing, Walker turned down an opportunity to speak, which angered Cheek's parents.
