Football's getting too damn complex

VprHis

Get off my lawn, you hooligans!
I'm throwing this in here, cause it's not worth polluting the main FB board with it.

I'm writing from the perspective of a former OT/DT/Elephant Back--now THAT was fun :))

I miss the days when blocking schemes were explained to us in 'point and grunt' terms (also known as linespeak) Let me explain... here's a typical scene from an early summer practice.

[coach smacks OT in the head, points at defensive end] "when the play starts, you hit him."

[puzzled look from OT]

[coach pantomimes blocking the DE] "YOU. HIT. HIM!"

[OT punches DE]

[Coach swears]

[line coach comes over and reverts to linespeak]

[points at DE] "GRUNT!"

[OT understands, levels DE on next play]

Eventually, the need for pointing and grunting in the huddle, at the line, etc. became merely a way for the opposing team to read and respond to the forthcoming play, leading to the demise of linespeak, and the advent of such things as playbooks, and zone blocking...

Us poor dumb animals just can't keep up in today's modern world. It's all about smart linemen... with good footwork. Dammit, in my day we just jumped up and stomped a mudhole in the other guy's ass. Simple, effective. Brutal. Made for good television.

Ah, well.

This post is proof that I should NOT be allowed to spend 20 hours at school in one day.
