Football Press Luncheon Thread

Yesterday's press conference. I've included a bit from the middle about using the January 8th game as motivation, and whether the score/date were the security combination at the WHAC.

official.site

REPORTER: There's a perception nationally that 41-14 has helped you motivationally get to this point, is that accurate? And if it is, what have you done as coaches to remind your guys of that game? Is it pictures in the facility, is it things that direct or is it more subtle, if that's a factor at all?

COACH TRESSEL: I think anytime you come up short in anything it helps you. Unfortunately. I wish life were different, but things that maybe I haven't done as well have helped me the next time I've tried to do them. Probably more subtle than direct. We don't start every team meeting with, now, "don't forget," because you don't have to. Now, if you thought there was ever a point in time where someone forgot something where they dared and not done as good as they could, then it would be a good time to remind them, but probably more subtle than --

REPORTER: Do you think that has driven your guys to get back where they are?

COACH TRESSEL: Again, I think anytime you come up short of what you're capable of, it helps you. So, now, what degree? I don't know. Would we be 4-3 had we won that game? I can't say that, so I don't know.

REPORTER: So it's not an accident that -- I don't want to give away your security code, but it's not an accident that somewhere in there 41-14 in '06 figure in?

COACH TRESSEL: In fact, those numbers aren't in there at all.

REPORTER: We've heard they were, is that wrong?

COACH TRESSEL: That's wrong.

REPORTER: Never?
COACH TRESSEL: It's wrong they're not in there now. I've never lied to you. I've tried to avoid you, but --

I'd say those numbers were used in the past, but won't ever be used again.

And a reference to his poll voting:

REPORTER: Jim, I know this is not your focus at all, but I'm just curious, what do you know about South Florida football?
COACH TRESSEL: Well, I saw them on TV one Saturday night against West Virginia, or was that a week night? They're good. That's what I know about them. And I know they went to Auburn. I have to learn a little bit, because I have a vote, okay, and I haven't been the greatest voter in the past, admittedly. South Florida's good. They go to Auburn and win and you beat West Virginia who's a great team. I can't rattle off the rest of their schedule, but those jump out at me and they're a good team.

See Hooley's article as ESPN:

ESPN - Hooley: Ohio State uses bowl loss as motivation - College Football

At various times since the remodeled Woody opened this fall, the four-digit entry code has rotated without ever straying from one central axis.

For a while, it was 41-14, the score of Ohio State's loss to Florida in the BCS National Championship Game.

Then came 01-08, the month and day of the debacle in Glendale, Ariz.

And finally, 01-07, the record thus far for this calendar year.

My favorite comment from Tuesday's presser this week was this one, though:
COACH TRESSEL: I think that the way to assess if someone is focused is if they're doing what they're capable of doing. If you were capable of catching that pass, there's probably only one reason you didn't, you didn't pay attention. And it's something that we talk about in terms of whoever they are. If someone is not getting as good a grade in class as they are capable of getting, chances are they're not focusing on that class at the moments they need to be.

So it's the expectation we have to become as good as we can at everything we do, and it's not an easy thing. I don't know that it's human instinct to be focused all the times you should. I know I've been unfocused at home sometimes and my wife says something and I didn't hear it and that was probably not the best focus. So that's human. And we've got to make sure that we work as hard as we can to be focused on whatever the moment happens to need.

I meant that the same numbers won't be used again, for security reasons.

Does Hooley realize that 01-07 is also the date for the next title game?

JT talking about the on-field post-game from 2001, when JoePa broke the Bear's record; his job interview at PSU (JT's Dad made him take the Akron assistant job instead), and then some give-and-take with Earle.

official.site

...

REPORTER: Do you recall -- maybe you didn't even get to speak to Paterno after the first game you coached there when he set the record. Do you recall if you got to speak to him after the game, and if so what you said to him? I know they carried him off.

COACH TRESSEL: You know, I think I did. It was crazy. Or maybe I didn't. You know what? I've spoken to him so many times at the middle of the field --
I think I did get to speak to him, just congratulated him. You know, what he's meant to the game, you know, and it's extraordinary. I don't know, 300 and some odd victories. It was incredible.

REPORTER: When you interviewed with him, did you get that interview on your own or did your dad help you get it?

COACH TRESSEL: I sent about 100 letters and I got about two call backs. If I had to bet, my dad had something to do with it because, you know, he was well respected and Coach Bruce told me the only reason he hired me is because my dad was a good coach.

COACH BRUCE: I did tell him that, but I didn't mean it.

COACH TRESSEL: You told me a lot of things I hope you didn't mean.

Here's an exchange with a reporter asking JT if he'll coach long enough to match Joepa's win total.

REPORTER: You've averaged 10 wins over the years. If Paterno would do that, you'd have to average eight wins in 18 years to pass him. Is his record safe?

COACH TRESSEL: It's very safe.

REPORTER: Why would you not contemplate coaching into your seventies or do you not think you could average eight wins a year for 17 years?

COACH TRESSEL: The former.

REPORTER: Why not? He'll be 81 in December.

COACH TRESSEL: You know, are you going to write to your -- no, you don't write anymore. You got fired from that. Are you going to broadcast until you're 80?

REPORTER: I hope not, Coach.

COACH TRESSEL: Okay. We're on the same page. Last question, Lori.

I just really like this coach. As a teacher. As a manager. As a mentor to young people. As a leader.

Values cannot be taught, they are caught from observing great leaders.

Ohio State doesn't know how lucky they are to have this guy on board. I've had an opportunity to be around some really great leaders, even Mandela, and I rank this guy up there with the best I ever saw.

Couldn't agree more. I'm so glad we're out of the Cooper years. This program has done a complete 180 and not just by how they play on the field.

So it would be safe to say that Hooley has irritated and pissed of JT at this point?
If you looked up words or phrases such as overreacts, flies off the handle, or makes mountains out of molehills, Hooley's picture would accompany every single one.

I couldn't think of a personality that is more a polar opposite of JT ... so yeah, maybe.

Hooley (and Mike Ricordati) spent a weeks worth of 1460 airtime railing against Henton, then another week railing JT for not cutting Henton, just this past month.

Sucks. 1460 really went into the toilet once Uncle Fitty left in 2004.
