This was on the local news out here in Beantown:
Football Player Hospitalized After Hazing Incident
A freshman football player at Sandwich High School remained hospitalized Thursday night after being critically injured in an alleged hazing incident.
NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that the teen's mother, who did not want to be identified, said her son is improving after emergency surgery to remove a ruptured spleen, but he did require two blood transfusions Thursday.
"I am just disgusted with the whole situation. I can't believe that something like that could happen. It just never occurred to me that hazing is still going on," she said.
The teen's mother has been keeping vigil at her son's bedside at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, where he is listed in critical condition.
The teen's mother said the 14-year-old was injured Tuesday when he and several other younger football players were allegedly roughed up by upperclassmen. A varsity player, she said, came up behind her son and grabbed his ankles so that his body smashed to the ground. The incident happened before the coaches came out to the field.
"I hope that they are aware of the extent of the injuries that they put on my son. This is something he has to live with now for the rest of his life. It is not a broken arm or a sprained ankle. This is a lot more serious, and he will have a long recovery from it," she said.
School officials have launched an investigation into the incident and say it will affect all sports at Sandwich High School. Sandwich police are also involved in the investigation.
"This is serious. We are talking about high school students, and it's very, very important that these students know that there are consequences to be paid," said Sandwich Schools Superintendent Peter Cannone.
"Every coach has had an interview with the athletic director (Thursday) morning. Players will be removed from rosters and seasons will be affected," said Ellin Booras, principal of Sandwich High School.
"This is the kind of thing that I will not tolerate. And to say, 'This is just football'? I would not say that just because I don't know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. But you can be sure that systematically, across the system, we will find out and hazing will not be tolerated," said Cannone.
Two players have been removed from the football team, and suspensions and criminal charges may follow.
