STOCKTON, California (AP) -- An assistant youth football coach was arrested on charges of felony child abuse after rushing the field and knocking an opposing player to the ground, police said.
Cory Petero, 36, of Riverbank, turned himself in to Stockton police Saturday night following a late hit that turned into a brawl, with parents and children from both teams fighting on the field.
The incident was recorded on videotape. (Watch coach plow down opposing team player -- 1:35)
Referee Tim Winek said he had just called a penalty on Brian Wood, 13, a Stockton Bears player.
"There was a penalty on the play, and it was a late hit," Winek said. "The parent of the kid who got hit took exception to it. He came charging out onto the field."
Daniel Champion, who identified himself as Wood's father, told The (Stockton) Record that his son suffered bruises on his stomach and jaw from the assault.
The brawl erupted about 3:30 p.m. with less than a minute left to play between the Riveroak Redskins and the Bears.
Fighting continued for about 20 minutes, according to witnesses. No major injuries were reported.
    Police are investigating.

what a fuckbag. i hope he gets poked in the pooper in jail...

What an absolute piece of trash. I can't say I'm surprised considering some of the idiotic actions I've seen from parents at youth athletic contests. Just last week my buddy who coaches a flag football team for 9-10 year olds had a parent curse him and a couple of his players out b/c he thought they were cheating. Uh...it's just a game for kids. It's unbelievable how some people act at these events.

the referee has also come out and said that he had to jump on the kid to protect him and stop the guy from attacking him... the tape just shows him knocking the kid down but there was a lot more action. what a dumbass.....

Note to self, next time I assault a kid on the other team at my sons football games, do so early in the game, like before my potential victim already has bruises on his chest and jaw from, I don't know, maybe playing fuckin' football for the last 59 minutes! :roll1:

I do not condone what the parent who ran onto the field did, but I didn't view the video as being so violent as to cause all those injuries. The parent of the victim here is going to name every single cut, bump, and bruise his son incurred during the course of the football game in his lawsuit.
