For my generation, Floyd Patterson was forever characterized by his bout with Muhammad Ali. Calling him by his birth name of Cassius Clay, made Ali so angry that he toyed with Patterson for 12 rounds in order to have the more time to punish him. The fight was shown on SA television a few weeks back and it brought back so many memories of the taunting "What's my name? What's my name?" after each blow.

The fight made quiet Patterson a "great White hope" of sorts and drew a racial dimension that this small but strong hitting man did not wish it to have.

Patterson was a decent man that lifted his rear off the canvas a lot but won the heavyweight championship on his persistence. He turned a life that had "prison time" written all over it into a one of contribution and decency.

In my books, a class act. Go well, Floyd.
