Local stars get humbled

FULLERTON - Michael Herrick had difficulty gripping the ball. C.J. Gable struggled with his footing.
And Garrett Green spent more time picking himself up off the ground than he did standing in the pocket.
It all added up to a rather humbling experience for the area seniors who competed on the California All-Star team Saturday in the seventh annual CaliFlorida Bowl at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium.
Playing on a soggy field for the majority of the game that was the result of a driving rainstorm, California committed seven turnovers - including five fumbles - and recorded only one first down in the second half, resulting in a 20-0 loss. It was Florida's third consecutive victory in the series and fifth overall.
"I've never played in anything like that in my life," said Gable, a running back at Sylmar, who accumulated 142 all-purpose yards, including kickoff returns of 44 and 41 yards.
"I couldn't run the way I usually run because I like to use a lot of cutbacks, but I couldn't cut back on this field, so I just had to try to run straight ahead," Gable added. "I think we could've had a way better chance with better field conditions. We just couldn't execute the plays."
After California - which featured seven area players on its 41-man roster - forced Florida to punt on the game's opening drive, Gable touched the ball three consecutive times on California's first possession, the first two resulting in a 17-yard reception from Herrick and the second a 14-yard run.
On the third play, Gable fumbled near the Florida 20, a sign of things to come for both teams, which combined for seven lost fumbles and four interceptions.
"What are you going to do?" said Herrick, the Valencia quarterback, who set the state's career passing record with more than 11,000 yards during his three-year career.
"I couldn't get a grip and I couldn't throw the ball, and throwing the ball is what I do, so it makes it tough. We were moving the ball on that first drive and then we fumbled and we just couldn't get things going our way the rest of the game."
Herrick, whose powder blue and gold uniform was more than half covered with the earthy green and brown remnants of the field as he stood on the sideline after the game, completed four of nine passes for 20 yards and two interceptions.
"It's a whole different game playing on the turf and under the sun," said Herrick, who has committed to Mississippi. "(The ball) is heavy and it's muddy. If it's just wet, it's OK, but the way it was (Saturday), you couldn't get a feel for the ball."
Florida took a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter when Billy Lowe connected with Tony Wilson on a 16-yard touchdown pass. It was one of only three completions for Lowe and fellow Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, as the duo combined for 48 yards and two interceptions in 14 attempts.
Just before the half, Florida extended its lead to two touchdowns when Dustin Doe recovered a Kenny Ashley fumble and returned it 65 yards for a score. Tebow, who scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter, ran in the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.
Green (Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks) finished with one completion in four attempts for two yards and ran seven times for minus-7 yards. Teammate Kai Forbath had two punts for 87 yards and Rodney Glass returned a kickoff five yards.
Westlake's Jeff Miller, who has committed to UCLA, had a sack. Paraclete of Lancaster's Jake Dean, also committed to play for the Bruins, saw action on the offensive line.
