Florida State could receive $1 million from the state of Florida for potential litigation related to the Seminoles being omitted from the College Football Playoff. State governor Ron DeSantis, who is also running for president, is spearheading the effort to leave funds available in Florida’s $114B state budget for next year for a possible lawsuit.
This is in DeSantis' proposed budget and still has to be approved by state legislature.
“If you win and you are undefeated, it should mean something,” DeSantis said, according to the Associated Press.
He acknowledged that the damage is done for FSU’s championship hopes after the Seminoles were passed up by two one-loss teams in the CFP despite being undefeated, but said “let the chips fall where they may” regarding possible litigation.
DeSantis has gone head-to-head with Disney, a major driver of business in the state, in the past. Disney is the parent company of ABC/ESPN, and ESPN broadcasts the television rights to this year’s CFP while also playing an integral role in working with the body known as the Selection Committee that determines the "playoff" participants.
FSU would’ve made $6 million for making the CFP. The Seminoles are the first undefeated champion from a Power Five conference to not make the invitational in the decade of the four-team “playoff” format.
The proposed budgeting will go as follows: “SECTION 55. There is hereby appropriated for Fiscal Year 2023-2024, $1,000,000 in nonrecurring funds from the General Revenue Fund to the State University System Board of Governors for expenses related to litigation initiated by the Board of Governors or Florida State University, related to actions taken by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee on December 3, 2023, resulting in the Florida State University football team to be ranked fifth in the nation and, consequently, ineligible to participate in the College Football Playoff games for the 2023-2024 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 Football Bowl Championship series. The Board of Governors may expend funds appropriated in this section on such litigation related expenses incurred prior to the effective date of this section. The unexpended balance of funds remaining on June 30, 2024, shall revert and is appropriated to the Board of Governors for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 for the same purpose. This section is effective upon becoming law.”
