Florida gets a former Meyer player @ CB

Didn't see this posted yet.

Florida has picked up a new CB. Ryan Smith, a former starter for Meyer @ Utah has transfered to Florida and under the new NCAA rules will not be required to sit out a year- meaning he can step in right away to help out a backfield hit by dismissals and injuries. He'll have two years of eligibility remaining. Have to think it will help Florida this season to have an experienced CB who also has played under Meyer already. Lessens the learning curve substantially I'm sure.

The guy did beat beat out for the starting CB job at Utah last year, so I'd be surprised if he can hold up as a starter in the SEC.

I hate the idea of cherry picking talent... if this was really about the student, then make him sit out, but don't count that against his eligibility. That would give him an extra year of graduate school.

The kid gave his four years (or graduated early) at the school. Graduate school is another matter, especially for guys who know they aren't likely to play pro ball. If Maryland has a better graduate school for a kids major, why make him stay at West Virginia? He gave his time to the school.

If someone still has eligibility left after four years at a school, then I'm not sure you're "cherry-picking" talent.

He is actually a pretty talented CB. Meyer wouldn't waste a ship on him if he wasn't able to compete at a high level. He had a very good first day of practice so we will see.

Our CB position will be fine. Reggie Nelson is a beast and Reggie Lewis is a solid corner as well. Jacques Rickerson could be a starter sooner rather than later even though he is a true freshman and Ryan Smith gives us good depth.

I agree that allowing schools to cherry-pick talent is wrong, BUT...

1. If a student-athlete graduates from school they should not be penalized for changing schools to persue a graduate degree.

2. I could be wrong, but I believe the initial school must still grant his release.

3. The new school, I think, is still prohibitted from make the initial contact with the student athlete unless he/she has been released.

Basically, I don't think a coach can contact an athlete and offer them a scholarship to come to their school once they finish their degree at the other place. I think the NCAA was worried about cherry-picking as well and took steps to ensure it didn't happen.

It is true that the player must be released from his scholarship in order to transfer.

Since that is true, I am assuming it's also true that no contact may be initiated by an outside school.
