FLDS wackos at it again...

Just about every religion has some disturbing skeletons in its closet. Keep in mind that that article is not about ALL Mormons, but rather as sect of feral fundamentalists. There are groups like this that have split off or claim to be associated with every significant religion I can think of. I'm not making excuses - the shit in those articles is absolutely depraved. People should not go around talking about Mormons like they're all like that though - lest we overlook some of the things that have been done and continue to be done in the name of other religions in this country. I know several Mormons, and the only problem I have with them is that they're scUM fans. Other than that, they are upstanding citizens.

No doubt, you make the distinction when Muslim wackos are involved? Sure....

i still think those mormons are a band of brain-washed people who refuse to enjoy life's good things and think they are so much more enlightened and holy then everyone else.
ever watch The Village? people think that movie's a joke, but sadly, there really are places like that...

though i must say that those freaks are just as much 'mormons' as the KKK is a fundamentalist Christian group...

ask your Mormon friends about the 'revolution' that Brigham Young lead against the U.S. government some time, or about the fact that there was a price on Joseph Smith's head back in PA while he was off in Utah with his sheep -er followers... they'll start talking really fast... :p

Wow, you got me good you fucker! As a matter of fact, I do make the distinction. Attempting to justify your bigotry by implying that people who call you out on it are guilty as well? That's pretty weak, and even if true, doesn't justify your stereotype. How 'bout you save comments like that for some of the more reactionary, less idealistic members of the board?

...and LV, you're right. There have been some pretty fucked up things that have happened in the name of Mormonism, even by the founders. There have been acts of equal depravity done in the name of traditional Christianity though, and when you consider the scope of Christianity in terms of time and political influence, many of the events you speak of are quite small in comparison.

Being too lazy to tackle actual issues here, I will simply pass along this tidbit.

The Utah city in the story, Hurricane, is correctly pronounced "Hur'kin." It only took me two years to figure out these were not two separate cities, one of which I couldn't find on a map, and the other nobody ever mentioned in conversation.

That is all.

As a Wisconsonite, Deety, you may appreciate this. A few years ago, I lived in Milwaukee and for work, we had to bring back some auto parts from a town pronounced as 'MARE-uh-vul' Indiana. A young guy drives into Indiana, and ended up coming all the way back without the parts, because he couldn't find it, although he did locate a town called Merillville just south of Gary, Indiana. Why he didn't stop the truck in Indiana and make a phone call, however, was a mystery; he just decided a 4-hour round trip without the merchandise was OK if he couldn't find the town. What a cheesehead!

would you care to tell us some of the 'equal depravity in the name of Christianity'? don't come at me with the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition, though, because that was the CATHOLIC Church, which is by NO MEANS Christian...

You're right, LV. I was taught for 8 years by nuns and 4 years by priests, and they never mentioned Christ or the Bible. They spent the whole time brainwashing us about the IRA - well, when they weren't molesting us.

Hopefully the sarcasm font wasn't necessary.

however, the Catholic Church is less a relgion than it is a Political Entity, which loosely joins Fundamental Judeo-Christain Doctrine with the Pantheon of the pagan Roman religion... instead of some Roman god of 'whatever,' now you have a saint so-and-so of the same 'whatever.' it's idol worship, plain and simple... remember the First Commandment? "I am the Lord Thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."

the Roman Catholic Church was not, is not, and never will be quote unquote Christianity... otherwise the Catholic Church would not have gone around murdering people who worshipped Christ in a different way than the Church saw fit, ironically, in the same fashion that Saul, AKA Paul was employed by the Roman Government to do before his conversion on the road to Damascus...

If telling your 12 and 14 year old brides "you have to know how to excite sexually and be excited. You have to be able to assist each other" while instructing them to shower and wear white robes when they come to you after shaving their pubic hair per your instructions and ending the discussion by softly singing the "Father, Son and Holy Ghost" refrain is wrong.....

Calling something a "religion" opens all kinds of doors...
