2023 FL DE Damon Wilson (Georgia Signee)

Per Wiltfong, Day and LJ are visiting Wilson in home today

Got a chance to watch more film on Wilson...WANT, WANT, WANT. As much as I like Matayo and Keeley, and acknowledging that one of those guys could end up in this class with him, I have Wilson as the clear #1 guy at DE for prospects on the board. He is a game changer with an incredible first step and finds a lot of ways to get to the ball, exactly what we need as a succession plan to Sawyer and JTT. I only mention the other targets just because if it becomes a numbers game or someone shies away from being in the same class as Wilson competing for PT (no reason to believe that is the case, just have seen that scenario play out in the past), Wilson is worth that happening.

Do what it takes to get this kid to Columbus, he's going to be a star at the next level.

Wiltfong just balled him to us.

would be huge.

he is my 1b behind Keeley.

fast, violent.
Great kid who works for his dad in construction.
The Dean follows suit.

Can’t discern if has his own goods or is plagiarizing Fong.

Saw on Twitter (lol) someone keeps saying Birm says this is false and Wilson isn’t coming …. Sounds fake, I highly doubt the CBs are inaccurate. But it is Birm so I was curious if anyone heard the same?
Birm is skeptical, or at least thinks it’s premature to make a prediction. Florida has reportedly offered Wilson a 7 figure NIL deal.

The rosiest of rose colored glasses could be that Birm is running interference to maintain some level of suspense for a recruit, as he seems to do from time to time.

Fair. If we’re going against 7 figure NIL deals I won’t be confident until the guy signs.

I thought that I read that it was UGA who offered the 7 figure deal.

And in recruiting, with kids who don't do many interviews, there will be many conflicted views. I always roll with Birm, and I respect his opinion, but Fong is every bit as certified in the recruiting world. I think at the end of the day the 2 of them have been positive about different DEs, so in my optimistic viewpoint OSU lands 1 of them. Whether its Wilson, MU or Keeley.
The only one who I kind of pay little mind to is Kurelic. He's wishy washy and quite clickbaity, IMO. He'll say he believes a recruit "may" commit, or he might not. He's always giving a 50-50 POV with little info to back up his cloudy claims

Something that needs to be remembered as well, Birm has never actually spoken to Wilson. He's going off his gut and nothing more. So TIFWIW from his in this instance

From Rusty Mansell on UGA 247 on Wilson...

"There's a ton of smoke with OSU right now and it all started last night" Then said UGA was in a good spot coming out of the weekend OV but OSU did a great job of getting in front of him on Monday...then said the prediction to OSU "very much could be real....these things can change quickly" meaning UGA was ahead now they're not.

Dang son, that would be huge. I have him as 1a with Keeley (but very close), obviously would love to somehow land both even if that is not a realistic hope. Wilson is going to be an absolute terror in the pass rush, he has the chance to impact run defense but Keeley is probably more adept there. Get both and whoa, it will be scary. Really have my fingers crossed on Wilson regardless, this would be an absolutely huge pickup.

Gosh, it would remind us of getting JTT and Jack Sawyer in the same year......#3 & #4 if I recollect. And our two got minutes as frosh, and are getting more minutes as sophomores. And that's with two other 5*s at DE. Imagine what could be......come on down! PS, I'm betting Keeley to Bama, and Ula-whatever to USC. Hope I'm wrong....

From the 11W board, take it for what it’s worth:

SCLA 3 HOURS AGO
I don't have much more to add factually to the conversation (and I'm steering clear of opinion). You raise some terrific points. A few comments: The only hesitation with Wilson and UGA is that they misplayed their pitch during his official. His father point-blank told Kirby and Will, "Wait. You think this all about $? You can't buy us." His family is the opposite of Keon in terms of pressure - they are all about "it's his life, we're just here to support him." They had a very direct conversation with Kirby and Will wherein they told UGA, "We're not for sale. If this (i.e., football) all goes away, we'll be fine." They are hard-working, proud people - not easily seduced by easy money. Still, the $ are stupid. Honestly, they should cash that check. Also, they LOVE Tray Scott - much more than they like LJ.

I'm ambivalent about Day's approach but I'll give this to him - he's authentic. Wilson's family thinks that Kirby is smarmy. They think that Day is for real. They know that Ohio State can't/won't "match" the Sea Island money, but they're not naive. They want Ohio State to articulate a plan. Ohio State was able to satisfy a similar request for JT. This said, they are NOT going to secure more $ for an incoming recruit than for a player on the current roster. Day just won't do it. It's an absolute line in the sand for Day.

I know that I'm longwinded here and for that I apologize, but I also feel the need to correct a misperception: Consider that LJ is NOT an advantage for Ohio State. There is a massive blindspot amongst Ohio State fans when it comes to LJ. Here's what Saban and Kirby say about LJ, "There are two ways to see it, and either way you're screwed. If you love Larry, what if he retires? If you want to go in the Top 10, what if he doesn't?" LJ is cast in the role of Mr. Yesterday to the Keeley, Matayo, Wilson level recruits. Objectively, spare the Chase and Bosa Brothers narrative - Chase would be a top 5 pick if my mother coached him, and the Bosas were born pros. If anyone knows Nick and Joey, well, suffice to say they're not exactly LJ ambassadors. Both Bosa boys think that LJ undeservedly drapes himself in a lot of their glory.

If I were Ryan Day, then I would hire Randall Joyner yesterday. He is Hartline. He is Frye. That's THE guy on the DL national landscape. The word is that LJ will be retained as a "pass rush specialist" or similar so as to honor his commitment to JT and Jack next year. If you're an Ohio State fan, you should hope that this is true. Stop crediting LJ with Chase, Nick, and Joey - that's not the way that other programs position Ohio State. Sam Hubbard is the actual LJ success story. Again, if I'm Ryan Day then I have Randall Joyner on speed dial. (P.S. Ryan Day has Randall Joyner on speed dial. He's the DL coach and Asst DC next year.)

Was just about to post this, lol
He made some great posts, and I actually surprised that Joyner wasn’t hired this off season when Day was cleaning house and kept LJsr on as a consultant or analyst. That SCLA person has made some very good points, and even with the Wilson CB,I’d be skeptical with NIL. But I have the UTMOST respect for Day for standing pat and refusing to offer HSers more money than players on the team. Team chemistry is a real thing, and throwing that off for a 5star,when those stars mean nothing when they enroll on campus is real. I would definitely feel some type of way if an incoming frosh who’s basically only had to use his raw talent to beat down HSers, now would make considerably more than me. Because I’m sure, none of those 5stars has seen a human being at OT the size of Dewand Jones in HS, and would have a lot of trouble getting around him.
