Rivals named the Buckeyes’ QB of the future its No. 1 overall recruit, and Ohio State’s offensive line recruiting continues to get gloomy.

The college football season is quickly approaching, and it certainly is starting to feel like football weather in Columbus. The Ohio State football team is hitting the practice field daily and weekend scrimmages have started. Because of this, the majority of headlines surrounding the Buckeyes are focused on this year’s crop of Buckeyes. That being said, recruiting never stops for Ohio State.

Monday was a slower news day for Ohio State on the recruiting front, but it was far from silent. The loudest news of the day landed when Rivals released the first of its updated recruiting rankings for the 2025 class.

The recruiting outlet only released its list of five-star recruits, but the list was littered with future Buckeyes, including five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair (Bellefontaine, OH / Bellefontaine) who was named the No. 1 overall recruit in the class.

Also included in the list of 24 five-star recruits were:

  • No. 6 five-star CB Devin Sanchez
  • No. 14 five-star LB Riley Pettijohn
  • No. 23 five-star CB Na’eem Offord
  • No. 24 five-star OT Carter Lowe

St. Clair committed to Ohio State last summer, and has seen his stock rise greatly over the last few months, beginning with a more-than-impressive performance at the Elite 11 finals. He is also highly regarded by the other national recruiting outlets. He is the No. 2 overall prospect in the 247Sports Rankings, and he is the No. 8 overall prospect by On3. ESPN also has him listed as the No. 15 prospect, and he is a top-three quarterback on all of them.

Also be sure to check out St. Clair finding out the news of his No. 1 overall ranking:

Ohio State five-star OT target commits to Georgia Tech

On Monday, we dove into the current state of Ohio State’s offensive line recruiting — and it was looking bleak. We learned later in the day that the worry was warranted, as Ohio State five-star offensive tackle target Josh Petty (Roswell, GA / Fellowship Christian School) decided to commit to hometown school Georgia Tech over Ohio State, Florida State and Tennessee.

Ohio State came on late for Petty and to its credit, became a real contender for his commitment. However, there was too much room to gain on Georgia Tech, who had long been the favorites to land him.

The news might not have been surprising, but it does shine a light on Ohio State’s offensive line shortfalls. The Buckeyes have just two commitments in the 2025 class in the aforementioned Carter Lowe and three-star offensive lineman Jake Cook. The Buckeyes do have one more major domino to watch fall as five-star offensive tackle David Sanders Jr. is set to announce his commitment Aug. 17.

I will be committing this Saturday!

Where: Providence Day Gymnasium (The Mac)

Time: 12:30

Everyone is welcome! See you there pic.twitter.com/63BsgqATVs

Ohio State is one of his top four remaining schools along with Tennessee, Georgia and Nebraska. The Buckeyes have long been contenders in his recruitment, and at one point were the favorites to land him. However, Tennessee has picked up all of the momentum in the last couple weeks, and with just days remaining before he commits, Ohio State is not sitting in the best spot.

The Buckeyes are not out of it, and Ryan Day has pulled off some crazy recruiting wins in the past. That being said, if Sanders were to spur Tennessee in favor of Ohio State, it would be some of Day’s best work yet.

Quick Hits

Ohio State was not only making recruiting headlines on the gridiron on Monday. Switching to the hardwood, Ohio State men’s basketball team, led by head coach Jake Diebler, made another top schools list for a blue-chip prospect.

This time the Buckeyes made the top eight schools for five-star guard Darryn Peterson. Alongside the Buckeyes, Peterson included Washington, Kansas, Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas State, Arizona State and USC. Peterson is scheduled to take an official visit to Ohio State on Aug. 30.
