I'm a fairly new rider (less than 2months). I took the MSF course offered by the state in early June (it is only $25). They use little Honda 250cc bikes in the course. Harley Davidson also has a course, but it is around $300.
I ended up buying a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 for my first bike because with anything smaller, I just didn't have enough leg room.
