Captain Hindsight

The Hero of the Modern Age
So today, I was fired from my job. It was my first job, and needless to say, my pride took quite a blow.

So, I work at a smoothie/sandwich/wrap shop, a mile from my house, and I'd been working there for two weeks, and I honestly had been one of the most devoted workers to this company. I'm not saying I was the best because I obviously wasn't, due to the fact that I was fired. Now before you all jump to conclusions by judging my character, the situation, etc. I would like you to take into consideration how this company is run.

The company opened once I started working, and the owners are a strict Hindu couple; which is kind of hypocritical, due to the fact that they sell meat products. Also, some of the workers (including myself), have had to show them how to use the cash register, the blender, and how to make sandwiches.

So try to put this altogether, and think about the fact that I had worked the most hours at the shop, besides maybe two or three other co-workers. I came in, on off-days, and I worked 38.5 hours last week, for a shitty six-and-a-half hour pay. Then, I worked a quality amount of time this week, too.

I had no previous offenses at the shop, and was working on a wrap today, and I was almost finished with it, going on eight minutes. Now, this is definitely not a time to be proud of, but my former managers have easily taken a good 10-12 minutes on numerous occasions on making wraps, and half the time on smoothies, alone.

Apparently, the customers was unsatisified with my effort, I guess, and told my managers that I was taking too much time; which I guess is understandable because we work to make the customers food, quickly, and at the best quality, possible.

So, my manager came in the back of the shop, where I was just about finished wrapping up the wrap, and told me to get out, and that I was done. To be quite honest, I wasn't sure if she was serious, delusional, or just stressed out, in general. So, I asked her, politely as possible if she was serious. And she told me the same thing, and to get out of the shop.

Earlier in the day, I looked at the calendar and times for next week, ad my name didn't appear on the list, so I was kind of curious if there was something wrong. I didn't mention anything, but after I was publicly humiliated in front of my friends, co-workers, and the consumers, my worst fear had come true, I was fired for something I wasn't sure of.

To be quite honest, I was having a miserable day, this morning. And honestly, I would have thought that being fired would have made the day a lot worse. However, I'm sort of still in disbelief about the situation, and kind of relieved to be looking for another job.

Haha, I don't want anyone's sympathy, nor do I need it. However, I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some advice on my situation, or mention the time that you guys got fired for the first time.

Thanks.

Sounds like they were looking for areason, again wouldn't worry about it. It was a first job and as long as you keep you head up and bust your ass at your next job you should be fine.

I still remember my first job in which I was working at a local plant nursery. Moving pots, planting seeds etc. Not that hard of a job and for the most part you never had to deal with people because everyone was just in different green houses working. The father of the owner was a jackass and would constantly run his mouth etc. One day I was eating my lunch and he came over and starting yelling at me about not cleaning up the mess in the greenhouse I was in. I informed him that I wasn't done with the job and it would be put away after I was finished. He called me a young punk with an attitude, I called him a senile old man ( I was 16 at the time) I left.....got a job at the local grocery store about 2 weeks later where I worked until I left for college 3 years later and still worked there summers and breaks.

When you said a smoothie shop, this is the first thing that came to mind.

But really man, don't sweat it.

I remember back in late Feb.- early March I got hired working at a bowling alley in the resturant. I was told I had to buy jeans to work in the resturant(I don't wear jeans, so I didn't own any). So I couldn't start the first week I susposed to. The manager in the resturant said no problem, just get the stuff you need and you can start next week.

So I got what I needed, and came back and he said I haven't made the schedule, I'll start you next week. I came back or called every week for about 2 to 2 and a half months. I kept getting told, next week you'll start.

I finally just got mad and thought I should go to his manager. She said she would look into it. I get a call back the next week from her saying that he said he already filled my position and there was no hours for me. He apparently also told her that after he told me what I needed, that I never came back, which is untrue I came back or called every week.

My parents were pissed and so was I because of the run around they gave me. I would've been fine if they just told me the first couple weeks there was no hours available, but to keep telling me for two months "next week come back". If I would've known that, I could've looked for another job.

Things happen... there are millions of opportunities in the world, and this is just a good excuse to get out and find a better one, and then do your best.

Might not want to be thinking of this as the "first" firing, though. Sounds like you're setting a goal. :p

My first and the next five firings came when I worked at the commons at tOSU. I had a bad habit going to happy hour at Papa Joes on Fridays before work. They kept hiring me back cause they were always short on people. Also got fired from 7/11 for suspicion of coming to work high. All they had to do was ask me and I could have removed the suspicion.

Am a firm believer in the silver lining of being fired is that you shouldn't have been working there in the first place. Can't remember seeing a competent person who is fired from one job not be successful at his next job.

What years did you work at 7-Eleven? Was it the one on Lane or on S. High? I used to work for 7-Eleven also just wondering if we passed in the night.......

Don't worry about it, if you are willing to work (per above) you should habve no trouble finding another job. Check out the your campus paper, the local paper, your school placement office, and internet hiring sites, etc.

If you were fired because of slow time although you were faster than your managers, then Karma will take care of them...

Getting the ax gives you character.
Sounds like they were most likely just worried about customer satisfaction.
I loved the first time I got fired...accused me of recieving a loaf of bread for free (Big Bear grocery). I was astounded that was all they had on me...looked much better than the 40's and booze we were slipping in between the loading docks.
My best feat was package taping a long row (approx 20) boxes of crackers adjacent to the isle and waiting for someone to try to buy some, as I strategically mopped and re-mopped the isle. Bad thing was that it was an old lady, and I ended up feeling bad about it. Hilarious as it was.

Learn from it...move on
