Game Thread Fiesta Bowl 2016 - tOSU vs Notre Dame, Friday 1/1 @ 1pET, ESPN

Well, had a blast yesterday. Woke up at 7 local time. Sis made a great breakfast. Went out to the front yard and took an O-H-I-O picture in front of the big cactus. 5 min later Brutus Buckeye retweeted it. Left for Glendale from Scottsdale at 9. It was me, my son, my bro in law, and his 2 son in laws. My sis warned me that my bro in law forgets things like tickets all the time, so I made sure he had them. He assured me he had given them to his most reliable son in law. It took a half hour to get over to Glendale, we parked at least a mile from the stadium, and began the hike. Got through tight security and then realized that the tickets were back in the truck. Unbelievable. We still got to our seats a half hour before the game started, but geez.

I would say the stadium was around 70% scarlet. Buckeye Nation never ceases to amaze me. During timeouts the stadium put fan shots on the screen; my favorite moment with that was when they showed a woman with a scUM hat on, and Buckeye and Irish fans united in hearty boos. Who goes to an Ohio State-Notre Dame game in scUM gear? Our section was mixed with fans from both teams, but mostly Buckeye fans. We were right beside the tunnel to the Buckeye locker room. Bosa walked past us after his bullshit ejection.

Funny aside: I go to lots of sporting events, especially high school. Girls and boys basketball tourny and AAU events all over the midwest, and football games.
And I go to college basketball and football games every now and then. So, I run into all kinds of people at these things, but there is this one guy, Bob, from New Philadelphia that I seem to run into at maybe 50-75% of these events. On the way out here I laughed at the thought of me running into Bob at the Fiesta Bowl. At half I went up on the concourse for more libation, and while I was watching TBDBITL someone grabs me around the neck from behind and turns me around - and there was Bob. It's weird how many times I run into this guy, and it's even weirder that I would run into him this far from home, and even weirder that he would be in the same part of the stadium I was in, and then off the charts weird that he would recognize me in the crowd. I need advice. Is Bob a stalker? LOL.

As for the football, it was great for the Bucks to come out and show that they were focused and motivated. They were clearly the more talented team and started that way. The Irish don't quit. The score before half kept them in the game. I never really felt that Ohio State would lose the game, but mo did shift there for a while in the 3rd qtr. Zeke's run kinda restored normal order to the universe, and we walked out happy.

The boys want to go eat lunch. I will check back in later or next week.

Remember when JT Barrett lined up under center on 4th and short and ran the QB sneak for the first down? Was that the first time we've ever seen JT under center? What about Cardale or Braxton? Have they run the QB sneak under Meyer before? Has the QB even lined up under center before since Meyer became the head coach?

I remember many times going for it on 4th and short from the shotgun and wondering why they didn't just sneak it, especially with Cardale. I honestly can't recall ever seeing an OSU QB line up under center since Urban got here until Friday.

NCG vs Oregon and CJ did the old end around...

File this under "there's one in every crowd". Had some really good Irish fans around me who engaged in some good natured ribbing and good football conversation. But there was this twenty-something guy behind me who finally made me say to my guys "Why is it the guy who knows the least about football has to be the biggest mouth in the entire section?" This guy talked way too loud, way too much, and didn't have any clue about what he was talking about. I'm a patient man, and relatively tolerant, but I eventually considered doing serious bodily harm to this guy.

Another guy, a couple rows behind us, had the "Let's Go Irish!" thing going. It felt like he was screaming in my ear. Lesson is I have several more reasons to hate Notre Dame (in the sports sense, of course).

It's a bittersweet time of year. Can't complain about a major bowl victory and a 12-1 year, but this team had more in it than that. We are saying bye to guys like Bosa, Elliott, Lee, Decker, Perry, etc., but it's exciting to speculate about who the next group of stars will be that emerge. Overall, this marks the beginning of another 8 months of waiting for the next CFB season. How many days til the spring game?

Wrapping up London trip today. Fly home tomorrow and the first item on my agenda will be to pour about four fingers of Oban and call up the Fiesta Bowl game from the DVR. Come Monday I'll begin to re-watch the last few games with the big weasels, followed by the CFP games from 2014, throw in a couple of games of the Bucks pissing on Penn State and wash it all down with the 1969 Rose Bowl. Winter has its benefits.

OK, cramped flight. luggage drag and customs clearance behind me, I poured my self the scotch and began to take in the Fiesta Bowl. I know I watched with scarlet lenses in front of my eyes, but did any one else seem to think that the refs gave ND better spots on the ball placement? And did the director call for more shots of the ND band?

Of course it's possible that he wanted to know what the Irish brigade wears under those outlandish kilts.

I didn't stay online for the entire game thread, but I think I recall some references to questionable spots.

Welcome home.
