FBU/Top Gun Camp Thoughts

For a couple of reasons, I had a chance to attend the FBU/Top Gun Camp at All-Star Sports Complex in Paisley, Florida. The main reason is because of Steve Deluca and the guys at All-Star sports who I had the pleasure of working with earlier in the year for a camp we helped put on. If you are a coach or athlete, check them out at http://www.as-camps.com because they run the finest training facility in the business.

A number of position groups were on different fields, so I was only able to catch mostly drills and a couple of 1 on 1's for DL/OL and the afternoon session of drills and 7 on 7 with the WR/DB's.

QB's:

I didn't get to watch a lot of the QB's. In the afternoon session, they ran 7 on 7 on both sides so it was very confusing. The one QB that stood out was Marcus McDade, he's a legit 6-3 kid out of Stockton, California. He's athletic, threw the ball with good zip, he was accurate, and just simply threw a nice ball. I don't think he played a lot last season, but he's a kid to keep an eye on.

RB's:

Lache Seastrunk (Class of 2010) has the biggest calves I've ever seen on a High School RB. At the end of a long day he did two standing backflips. He's extremely athletic and looked very good catching the ball out of the backfield in 7 on 7's. He had one nice catch in particular where he caught it and came down and tight ropped up the sidelines.

DJ Morgan (Class of 2010) the USC commitment worked out at WR during the 7 on 7's and looked pretty good. He beat the CB's deep a couple of times and showed that he could play the position.

WR's:

Wilhelm Tye (Class of 2010) this kid is a big time sleeper out of Middletown, Connecticut. He's in the 6-4, 6-5 range and around 230. I think he's a TE at the next level, and he has very good hands. He's really raw, and he also played LB last season. He's a kid that's going to blow up soon IMO. He had decent speed, very good speed for a TE, and he definitely passes the look test.

Tehvyn Brantley (Class of 2010) another impressive performance by the camp warrior! He shows out at every camp/combine. He just has a knack for making the big play.

Markeith Ambles (Class of 2010) Ambles looked very polished and smooth as anything. He ran great routes in drills, and showed some great hands. He mossed a CB in 7 on 7 and made a spectacular catch.

Kasen Williams (Class of 2011) He really does look the part. It took him some time to get used to the routes Andre Rison was teaching him in the drills, but he's a special player. Doesn't flash a lot of speed but he's not that type of WR.

OL:

I didn't have a roster at the time, so I can't tell you if it was Arie Kouandijo (Class of 2010) or Jimmy Gjere (Class of 2010). I want to say it was Gjere and he had some good reps against Ronald Powell and Gabe King. He went toe to toe with both of these kids.

DL:

Gabe King (Class of 2010) Gabe was battling a hamstring problem but he looked good. He lost one battle to Gjere but after instruction from the coaches, the next play he powered his way past him.

Sharrif Floyd (Class of 2010) I didn't see him in any reps but I was told by one of the DL coaches that he was impressed with him.

JR Ferguson (Class of 2010) Same as Floyd but I heard he was doing reps at DE.

Ronald Powell (Class of 2010) Powell spent time at DE in the AM and in the afternoon session he spent time at WR. He didn't really dominate at WR, but that was to be expected with the talented crop of kids in attendance. He did beat a number of LB's and CB's but had some poorly thrown balls to deal with. I saw him do two reps at DE, Gwere got the best of him in one, but the other he used his speed to blaze past him. As far as the rumors that he came directly from Gainesville, I can't vouch for that but Paisley is near Deland, so it wasn't too far. After talking with a few people, the vibe out there was that he has the most upside out of any kid out there. Oops I forgot to add that he made a nice catch near the sideline during the drills and didn't see the hurdles right behind him. It was a disaster in the making and as he turned around full speed he quickly hurdled them with seriously about a foot to make a decision. If that was any normal person, it would have been ugly.

Owamagbe Odighizuwa (Class of 2010) I didn't see him do any reps but he does look the part. He has an impressive frame. The 1 on 1's lasted briefly and looking back I wish I would've checked them out in the afternoon.

Danny Palmer (Class of 2010) The Lake Brantley standout needs to add weight to be a DT, but he is so technically sound. He was very impressive, just needs to add weight.

LB's

Nickolas Forbes (Class of 2010) Forbes did really well in 7 on 7, showed good coverage skills and got his hand on a few balls.

Curtis Grant (Class of 2011) and Khairi Fortt (Class of 2010) Both had their moments in 7 on 7, but another pair of kids that definitely pass the look test.

DB's

Nick Waisome (Class of 2011) Waisome and Ricardo Allen IMO had the best sessions for any DB in 7 on 7. Waisome didn't allow any catches and he jammed two kids and made them look silly. The first one was ridiculous, the second one the kid was so frustrated it looked like he was going to tackle Nick.

Keenan Allen (Class of 2010) Allen did a great job at Safety in 7 on 7. If the pads and helmet were on, some WR's would have been lit up. He covered the field well and broke on the deep ball very well. I was told he had a nice pick in the AM session of 1 on 1's.

Sean Parker (Class of 2010) Parker made some good plays and had some nice pass breakups. Looking at his body though, he wasn't as impressive as other DB's out there.

Martinez Davis (Class of 2010) The CB from Kentucky showed some flashes in 7 on 7. He displayed good speed and quickness and had nice hips.

Ricardo Allen (Class of 2010) The Mainland star had a nice pass breakup in 7 on 7, and he had a jam on a WR that made him look silly. Displayed great coverage skills and was told he was also the best DB in 1 on 1 drills in the AM.

Anyway not sure how many tOSU targets are on there, I figured I would let you know how the day went.

Taylor Graham was there. He looks quite stiff but is a nice kid and obviously knows what he's looking at coverage wise. The biggest thing is that none of the QBs can take what they learned in drills and apply them to 7-7, they all revert to old habits. Long stride, tilted shoulders, etc.

EDIT: Ronald Powell is on another damn level from everyone. He just goes off and reps everywhere and has a killer body (not to go Barry Every on anyone).

As for McDade, he just doesn't have anything going on upstairs. Some improvement will be made as he gets more experience, but he couldn't follow simple directions in routes-on-air. Combine his athleticism with the smarts of Cole Marcoux and you'd have a top 50 kid.
