Matt Daniels, Taking a Chance with the Buckeyes
<O:p
Walk-on Fullback, Matt Daniels, talks about why he walked on to the team, the highlight of his high school career, and what he thinks about the performance of Coach Tressel.
By Steve Patterson
What was the highlight of your high school career?
'The highlight of my high school career was a game winning touchdown run my senior year against Bexly High School. Like Ohio State, when I was at New Albany the fullback seldomly saw the ball for rushes. The play was a midline right up the middle and the QB gave me the ball. I have to credit my QB Matt Ripple with a great fake because after a couple of bounces off the D-line I was in the endzone for a 20-something yard run.'
Which colleges recruited you? What led you to your decision to attend Ohio State?
'I was recruited by Kenyon College and Wittenberg my senior year; however, I decided to take a chance at walking on for the Buckeyes.'
How has the level of competition compared to what you anticipated when you selected Ohio State?
'The level of competition is obviously some of the best in the country, but the real difference in my opinion is the speed at which the game is played in college and especially at Ohio State. At times high school games seem to be in slow motion to me. Also I feel blessed to get the chance to play with All-Americans and such great college players.'
What do you think of Coach Tressel and his performance with the program?
'Coach Tressel is the kind of coach for whom you want to do your best. That goes for the entire coaching staff as well. They are guys that care about their players on the field, off the field, in the classroom, and outside of the classroom. As far as football goes, I could only hope to understand and know the game like he does one day.'
Has it always been a dream of yours to play at Ohio State?
'Playing at the Ohio State University for the Buckeyes is a dream come true. This season I was blessed with going into the games against Illinois and Northwestern and the feeling of playing in the Shoe is one which is impossible to describe.'
