They didn't blow it dead because it was a live ball. Hit the returner. Dumb on both teams. Going the wrong way, and then tackling him and losing 2 points.

You can't run with a fumbled kick or punt. The play was dead when it was recovered. The refs were as lost as the returner

Is that rule different in college than in the pro's? I thought if the ball bounced up and hit the player you were punting it to, it was live and could be advanced.
