G&J,

The main weakness I see is at 1B. Is Swisher going to be your starter there? He may have a breakthrough season, but if not, it would be nice to have a good backup plan.

Nice outfield and RP. Starters may be a little weak at this point.

Piney's right, you'll be able to improve your team through free agents as the season starts. Watch for players that have a rough start to the season and get dropped when their owner gets frustrated.

No. Swisher will not start at 1st. I will start S. Casey....Swisher can play either 1st or Right...That's why I picked him and he is ok at the plate..He is also a Buckeye so that was a big reason I picked him..To be honest I was always a fan of Swisher since he was a buckeye..Swisher was my dark horse pick. My brother and I always fought about how good he would be in the pros...My bro said he would never make it as a pro b/c of his size...I told him it doesn't matter if he can hit and is a baller...My brother said that Doug Deeds would have a better pro career...I guess we know who won that battle...

Dang it... I just finished this nice critique of your draft but then I screwed up and lost it. So now you get the short version

Not going to rip you on your draft as it is your first. But I will give you critical feedback so you know what you did and so you can improve on your next draft.

First step is go back through the whole draft and see if you would have picked the same players. This is a great way to grade yourself and learn from mistakes that you can see. Plus sometimes the greatest critic is yourself. But on to mine  And since this is the short version I will just chime in with picks I didn't like or really really really liked.

Pedro at 18??? He would have been there at 23 and maybe 38. But then again I am of the belief that you should never take a pitcher with your first 3 picks unless a superstar fell to you. Pedro of 3 years ago... easy pick at 18, Pedro right now is not worth it.

Grady was a little early, but then again you were probable with a bunch on Indians fans eh? While I am an Indians fan Grady is not worth the 23rd pick. I can bet Chone Figgins, Chase Utley, or Gary Sheffield were there and they are much better picks.

Loved the Matsui pick. I actually have him ranked higher than Grady. Big difference between 23rd pick and 58th eh?

Swisher... :smash: He would have been there 10 rounds later.

Love the Gagne & Isringhausen double pick. Great value where you got them but you should have picked Baez later in the draft and if he is a free agent grab him so you have Gagne's insurance policy.

Scott Rolen is another great value pick.

Jason Kendall??? Was there a catcher run that round? Needless to say Kendall is not even in my top 10 Catchers, I will just leave it there.

Dan Haren... LOVE IT!

P. Wilson? Please let that be Preston Wilson right? If so... GREAT LATE PICK! if not... eh???

Overall not horrible but not great either. You could have tried to speculate in the later rounds on younger players or breakthrough type performances. But you will have fun combing through the waiver wire picking up players because you do have a lot of dead weight you can trim to pick up players that start hot.

Piney

Thanks for the honest evaluation...That was a big help...You have a good point when evaluating yourself. "Look back and ask would you pick the same players?" And the million dollar answer is probably not..

Pedro was a tough pick for me...Honestly I wanted Roy Halladay(Sp) instead..He was picked right before me...So I was pissed....Not sure how Pedro will do this season with his injury..I really think he will be fine though..

Grady was a hunch...I am a huge Reds fan but have recently jumped on the Sizemore bandwagon...I think he will bust out this year and get me some points...He has great speed and is a good hitter. Premature? Maybe he was a little but he was my surprise pick...Sheffield would've been a good pick as well. I definitely agree with you there.

Read my previous post about the Swisher pick.....I hear you on that one...

Kendall is probably the pick that I am kicking myself the most over...Don't know why I got him...Actually Piazza was available but I just wasn't sure if he would be healthy all year....I was very hesistant in not picking Piazza...If I were to do it again I would pick Piazza...

I thought my RP was my strong point of the draft.. I also love the D. Haren pick...I am a huge Gagne fan and Izzy fan....

Yes it is Preston Wilson and not Paul Wilson....Thought that was a good late round pick up...Not so sure how good my SP will be with: Pedro, Zambrano, Wood, Haren, Clement...

I also thought Scott Rolen was a good pickup...

What do you think of Trot Nixon???

Thanks again for the Eval...

Frankly, I'd rather have three MRs that give me 210-240 innings, a 2.80 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 15 wins between them than a single starter that would be paid roughly the same amount (good middle relievers generally go for .50-.70).

If you go with 3 mr's, how low do you finish in wins? You need 2 decent closers in a 10 team league, and if you go with 3 mr's, how many wins can you get from 4 starters? I'm fine if a mr has a chance to get saves, but I couldn't possibly compete if I had 3 mr on my starting roster of 9 pitchers. They're great for era and whip, but the leagues I'm in have a minimum of 1000
ip for the season. If you don't get 1000ip out of your staff, then you get a 1 in era and whip. It's a nice rule that keeps teams from loading up on relievers to get the big points in era and ratio.

The auction format is SO much better than drafting.

Last year I finished with 78 wins from these pitchers:

Colon, Bartolo LAA (21)
Wakefield, Tim Bos (16)
Contreras, Jose CWS (15)
Donnelly, Brendan LAA (9)
Elarton, Scott Cle (5)
Gordon, Tom NYY (5)
Hermanson, Dustin CWS (2)
Riske, David Cle (2)
Hernandez, Runelvys (2)
Brazelton, Dewon (1)

It's an eleven team league, and that was good for fifth place in wins. I finished third overall. Colon, Wakefield and Contreras were the only starters I had over the course of the entire season. We also have the 1000 inning minimum--I finished with 1165.

How'd you finish in the rest of the pitching categories?

9 wins from Donnelly is awesome.

Did you have to do any end of season shuffling to get to 1165 ip. That's cutting it close, but
great planning.

Eighth in HR, sixth in RBI, first in steals and second in average.

C Kendall, Jason
C Rodriguez, Ivan
1B Sexson, Richie
2B Figgins, Chone
SS Berroa, Angel
3B Inge, Brandon
CI Young, Dmitri
MI Menechino, Frank
OF Pierre, Juan
OF Crisp, Coco
OF Damon, Johnny
OF Kielty, Bobby
OF Williams, Bernie
DH Hafner, Travis

That was at the end of the season, anyway. Doesn't reflect my having drafted (and vastly overpaid for) Aaron "The Albatross" Boone.

Now back to me... Everything is good... my Sunday draft moved to 11am so I have plenty of time before the 3pm meeting to get most of my draft done. So all is good, and I know all of you were worried
