I was wondering if anyone has ever participated in a fantasy baseball league on yahoo or any sight for that matter...This is my first attempt. Our draft is Sunday night...

Does anyone have any insight on how to draft..(pitchers first, etc...)...What position usually gets you the most points...Are there any clues or helpful hints that I should take into consideration?

Thanks

I'm in a league on Yahoo, but draft strategy kind of depends on the type of league. Is it rotisserie or points, head to head or just season total?

For what it's worth, here's how I drafted (Keeper points league, head to head, 7th pick out of 8 people):

Round (Overall Pick) Name

<table class="simpletable" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr class="odd"><td class="first">1.</td> <td class="pick">(7)</td> <td class="player last" nowrap="nowrap">D. You could do "Best available" - that is take the highest ranked player regardless of position. I usualy do that to start.

There is also "position scarcity" where you try and take the best 2B because 2B is typically weak. I don't particularly like that idea, because you leave a lot of points on the board. (HEY! I've got the best C in the league! "Yeah, but Albert Pujols is still on the board.") That said, you do have to keep an eye on which players are going... you'll see a "run" on certain positions, a lot of times... if I take Victor Martinez at C, then all of a sudden, people try and snag the next best C... Actually, this happens most with closers, not position players.

Mol's right, tho. We'd need to know your league settings to be of any particular assistance.

Yeah, I kind of did best available to start, as well. Since I was at the end of the order, and we were switching directions each round, that affected my strategy, too. I wouldn't have taken Martinez in the 3rd, but I didn't think he'd make it all the way to the bottom of the 5th, so I went ahead and took him there.

I identified positions where if I didn't get the top few guys, I'd just ignore it for a while. Shortstop was one of those, where once Tejada and a couple others were gone, I just waited until the 12th, when Peralta was one of the best available players.

Don't let yourself get sucked into a run on a position if there's not much difference between who's left anyway.

Well, hopefully your draft went well. I would have chimed in and given you some great sites to check out to help ya. Plenty of resources out there on the internet.

But I just need to sound off cuz I am still pissed. Being forced to go to some church meeting with the pastor next Sunday while I am suppose to draft for my big money league. Live draft at a bar and then after we draft we would watch the Tribe that night to kick off the season.

Almost tempting to call off my wedding so I can draft my team, dang church weddings :roll1:

were you drafting against 4 year olds? Jason Bay in the 4th round? Peralta in the 12th? Lopez in the 16th?

Priorities!

You can get married the following week. Baseball starts only 1 day a year.

This is one of those meetings you have to go to before getting married. One of those group things with other couples going to get married in that church.

The woman already shot down me bringing my cell phone and my cheat sheets with me so I can draft during the meeting. I told her no one would notice the ear piece and me screaming about some guy taking the guy I wanted!

There are only eight players in our league, so talent is pretty heavy overall. However, I was quite happy to have all those guys slip that far.

Bay was the 6th outfielder to go, behind Ramirez, Guerrero, Abreu, Jones, and Cabrera. I would have probably taken him above Jones and maybe Abreu. Cabrera's a tough call because of his added 3B eligibility.

Peralta was only the 12th best SS by our points system last year, so I can understand him dropping, though he obviously has potential. Lopez was 9th overall last year. Both those guys were about 100 at-bats short of everyone ahead of them, though.

It can't be worse than the start of last year's draft. Here's my first 3 rounds last year:

B. Bonds
C. Schilling
A. Beltre

:shake:

Yikes, man... Lost a bunch of points out of the gate.

My league keeps four off a roster of 28. I kept Arod, Jeter, Ichiro and Rich Harden.

My team last year was awesome, but I had my draft yesterday and I'm somewhat unsure how it's gonna turn out. I drafted Randy Johnson, for example.. he's rated the No 5 P in my league, but then he is 42 and showed obvious signs of slowing down last year. I coulda taken Ben Sheets (who was on my squad last year) but his recent muscle problems worried me too much.

Yeah...fortunately I did very well with pitchers. Took Clemens in the 4th, Chris Carpenter in the 10th, Kenny Rogers in the 19th. Then I picked up Brett Myers and Felix Hernandez in free agency during the season.

Kept me in the running, but there's only so far a team with Brian Giles as its marquee outfielder for most of the season can go. :)
