The-Ozone Fall Practice Insider — Business as Usual for Buckeyes
Tuesday morning saw the Buckeyes on the practice field for their fourth practice of fall camp. The media was granted access for the first 30 minutes of action, which featured mostly jogging, stretching, punt team, and an individual drill or two.
With Urban Meyer still on paid administrative leave, the practice field was noticeably missing the man in charge. Acting head coach Ryan Day stayed with the quarterbacks during the early portions that were open to the media.
There wasn’t a lot to be gleaned, but there were a few things of note.
For instance, redshirt sophomore middle linebacker Tuf Borland appeared to be moving just fine. He was participating in drills. He suffered an Achilles injury in the spring with a September return likely. Meyer has said that Borland is a quick healer, so keep that in mind as we move closer to the season-opening kickoff against Oregon State.
Freshman wide receiver Kamryn Babb and redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Malik Barrow are listed on the official camp roster as injured. Babb tore his ACL this summer and is expected to miss the season. Barrow had surgery for a torn ACL last October.
Fourth-year junior H-back K.J. Hill was seen riding the stationary bike during initial warmups, which is indicative of a player who is not yet at full health.
Freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin was participating and throwing the ball fine. The quarterbacks spent their time about 100 yards away from the media and were mostly throwing to backs and tight ends.
There were really no full position drills to determine any type of depth chart just yet.
Demario McCall, C.J. Saunders, and freshman H-back Jaelen Gill were repping at punt returner.
Watching some offensive line drills, sophomore tackle Thayer Munford and freshmen Nicholas Petit-Frere and Max Wray move very well for big men. The athleticism is easy to see. Junior guard Michael Jordan was one of several players snapping the ball on the day. Meyer has said in the past that the offensive line always needs four guys who can snap the football.
After the media’s portion of practice was over, the public address system could be heard announcing that sophomore safety Brendon White recorded an interception and redshirt freshman wide receiver Ellijah Gardiner caught a touchdown.
There wasn’t much to be seen, but it was still good to get out there and see it.
We will have photos later in the day. The Big Ten Network was also on hand. Some of their tweets of the action are posted below.
Here are some videos of what we were able to see today.
