Ex-Buckeye settles into job of keeping Wolverines in shape

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- It's already been 10 years since Jon Sanderson helped Ohio State reach the NCAA Final Four in basketball, so opening his closet every day to find a wardrobe full of maize and blue doesn't really faze him.
"That was such a long time ago," said Sanderson, the new strength and conditioning coach for men's and women's basketball and golf at the University of Michigan. "I've coached at North Carolina, Barton, Marshall and Clemson. In this business, your team is who you work for, so (working for OSU's archrival) isn't weird at all.

OK, a little weird.

"I've been getting all these long-sleeve T-shirts and coats from the school to wear during the summer," Sanderson said. "I'm coming from South Carolina (and three years at Clemson), where I'm used to it being 85 when I wake up in the morning."

Sanderson, who turns 31 on Aug. 19, set himself up for good-natured ribbing from friends, family and associates about becoming a Michigan man with Ohio blood.

"There's been a few jokes, more so from the faculty and some of the coaches," the former Lexington All-Ohioan said. "You'd be surprised how many ex-Buckeyes work here. The new women's golf coach golfed for Ohio State. One of the head trainers here was at Ohio State. And there are even more with backgrounds at other Big Ten schools. There are guys on the men's basketball staff that have been at Penn State, Michigan and Indiana.

Jon Sanderson excited to work with U-M hoopsters, run camps this summer

On multiple occasions this spring, Michigan men?s basketball coach John Beilein has talked about the area in which his team will make the greatest strides this off-season.

It's not shooting, though the team ranked near the bottom of the Big Ten. He pointed to the ability to work with strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson.

Sanderson was hired last June and didn?t begin working with the men?s and women?s basketball teams until the end of the month, severely cutting into their development time.

This summer, he?ll have much more time to build on what he started.

Ohio State?s Jon Sanderson, member of the 1999 Final Four team, talks about working behind enemy lines, why he?s all in for Michigan and the advantages of having a full offseason to work with the basketball team (run time is 5:05; transcript below the jump).

Lost Lettermen: This is Jose Bosch from LostLettermen.com and I?m being joined by Ohio State?s Jon Sanderson, member of the 1999 Final Four Team. Mr. Sanderson thank you very much for joining us today.

Jon Sanderson: How you doing Jose? It?s great to be on your show.

LL: I?m doing very well, thank you very much. The first thing I have to ask and just have to get out of the way. You are an Ohio State guy. You?re working at U of M. Have you ever given any of the coaches and players crap being an Ohio State guy?

JS: Have I been given? It?s funny, I?m asked that a lot about the whole Ohio State and Michigan thing. And, you know what I tell everyone is when you work in the business and you?re a coach, whether its basketball strength and conditioning or football or any of these sports, to get to the Big Ten level is such an honor.

This is an opportunity that I couldn?t pass up. It was such a great job. It?s such an honor to be here and you really have to look past things like rivalries and things like that. People have been, especially friends and family, have gotten on me a little bit over the last year but it?s all in good spirit, it?s all in good fun. And they all have respect for the decision I?ve made and it?s worked out great. It?s been great so far.
