Springfield native and former Ohio State basketball star Ivan Harris will not be anxiously awaiting a phone call as the NBA draft unfolds beginning tonight at.
If it comes, it will be a pleasant surprise. If it doesn't, he'll keep working within the plan he, his family and agent Kevin Poston have set in motion ? the goal of which is realizing his NBA dream.
"It's a long shot to be drafted," said Poston on Tuesday. "I know that, he knows that, his family knows that. In fact, we knew that going in. There's a lot of players coming out early, and other factors that come into play. But there are a lot of different paths to the NBA.
"That may be overseas at first. That may be the NBA Developmental (League). All you have to do is put your best effort out there and see what happens.
"Michael Redd (Milwaukee Bucks star and OSU grad) was drafted 43rd. Now there's only two guys who've played on an (NBA) all-star team that were even drafted that year. You just don't know."
Harris is willing to do what it takes.
"I'm willing to go overseas for a while, then come back here," said Harris by phone Wednesday afternoon. "I talked to Terrence Dials, and he's playing in France. And he came back and had a tryout for the Cavaliers, I think this week, so it's definitely something that can be done."
Ron Lewis and Ivan Harris, starters on the Ohio State men's basketball team that reached the NCAA championship game last season, will spend their first year as professionals overseas.
Lewis, a Brookhaven graduate, left this week for Belgium, where he signed to play for Leuven in the country's Division I league. Harris, of Springfield, will play for Lappeenrannan NMKY in Finland's top league.

Ivan Harris really had no choice. The pro basketball player and Springfield native was going to get his bachelor's degree from Ohio State ... or face the wrath of Mom.
He chose the former, and Sunday, Aug. 24, received the fruits of his and Rochelle Harris' lifelong dedication to education. Ivan donned a scarlet and gray cap and gown and realized the dream his family had been planning for his whole life.
And it didn't have anything to do with the NBA.

The latest on Ivan Harris
Ivan Harris? next stop -- after playing in Finland last season and returning to Ohio State to earn his degree this summer -- is the NBA Development League, according to a story in his hometown newspaper, the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun.
?I'm very excited,? Harris said in a story published Sunday. ?I took the road of going overseas and had a great experience there. Now I feel like I want to come back to the states and try the NBDL route.
?My dream is to play in the NBA, so this is the next step. If not, I'll go back overseas if that's what it takes.?
Harris said he plans to attend a D-League tryout camp later this month in Fort Wayne, Ind., in hopes of being drafted by a team for the upcoming season, which begins Nov.28.

SPRINGFIELD ? Things happen fast in the pro basketball world.
Springfield native Ivan Harris found that out, uh, quickly.
In little over a month, the South High School and Ohio State University product went from an unsigned hopeful at a National Basketball Development League tryout camp in Fort Wayne, Ind., to a signed contract and an invitation to the training camp of the Erie BayHawks, the NBDL franchise of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In between, he was drafted by the NBDL team and met Cleveland superstar LeBron James and gained Cavs assistant coach Chris Jent as a supporter.
