Kazemi has been one of the best players in C-USA the past two years. Now he's the latest to leave Rice. (US Presswire)

Rice star Arsalan Kazemi told CBSSports.com he is leaving the Owls and has a wish list of six schools.

Kazemi, a native of Iran who averaged 12.1 points and 10.3 rebounds last season, told CBSSports.com that he received his release Monday and has requested it be sent to the following six schools: Kentucky, Texas, Oregon, Ohio State, Florida and Cincinnati.

"I'm trying to go to a high-major program for my final season," Kazemi said. "Those are the schools I'm interested in, but I'll also consider other schools."

The 6-foot-7 senior becomes the latest to leave Ben Braun's program, joining Omar Oraby (USC), Dylan Ennis (Villanova), Jarelle Reischel (Rhode Island), David Chadwick (Valparaiso) and Ahmad Ibrahim (overseas).

But Kazemi's departure is a huge blow.

Kazemi averaged a double-double last season for the second consecutive year and helped Rice finish with a 19-6 overall mark and a 8-8 record in league play.

I know he is good but I would like to see who we get in this recruiting class before I bring him on board.

He would only have one year of eligibility; as he played at Rice 3 years. If we have an available scholarship, I say take him.

I don't know if you take him if it means you can't take a 4-star 4-year recruit. He'd be great for a year, but you only get him for a year. And it may be too late for him to enroll for this semester - if it's too late to enroll now, he'd only have a half a year when he does get eligible. If I were Kazemi, I'd just turn pro and get a pro contract overseas rather than wait an extra year to play one at a HM.

With Thomas 99% going pro, that gives 5 ships open. The advantage of a SR xfer is that you only tie up the ship through the 2013/14 season. It would be free to sign a 2014 recruit with so there is almost no downside. With 5 openings this would be a no brainer.:osu:

Ex-Rice star Kazemi eyeing Oregon, Kentucky among transfer options
By Luke Winn, SI.com

Former Rice star Arsalan Kazemi told SI.com that he's likely to decide on a transfer destination by the end of the week, and that while he's considering a number of options, Oregon and Kentucky are his "early leaders."

The senior power forward said he intends to petition the NCAA for a hardship waiver to play in 2012-13 rather than sitting out a transfer year, but declined to specify the grounds of the waiver request. Kazemi received his release from Rice on Monday -- news that was first reported by CBSSports.com -- and asked permission to speak with Cincinnati, Florida, Ohio State and Texas in addition to the Ducks and Wildcats. He said that list could potentially expand in the coming days.

Sources: Ex-Rice standout Arsalan Kazemi chooses Oregon men?s basketball over Kentucky
Sources say 6-foot-7 double-double threat picks the Ducks over Kentucky

Oregon apparently has another late addition to its roster with the decision by Arsalan Kazemi that he will join the Ducks after leaving Rice last week.

When he was granted his scholarship release by the Owls, Kazemi said he was considering a half-dozen schools for his destination, and identified Oregon and Kentucky as his top two choices. UO officials have said they can?t comment on Kazemi because he is considered a recruit, but two sources with knowledge of Kazemi?s situation indicated that he had decided on the Ducks.

Kazemi met with UO coach Dana Altman last week, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle. One significant advantage for Oregon was that it doesn?t begin classes until Monday; other schools he was considering are already in session.

It?s not clear whether Kazemi will be eligible this season. Under normal circumstances, he would have to sit out this season as a transfer, but he has said he will appeal to the NCAA for immediate eligibility for hardship reasons that he hasn?t publicly disclosed.

If he is still an Iranian citizen, it may not be that simple. According to this site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_service#Iran

Iran has a mandatory military service for men which starts at the age of 18. Duration of military service is dependent on some conditions and circumstances. There is a 20-month military service for general, 24 months for destitute areas and 22 months for boundary areas; there is two months for military education. There are exceptions for those who cannot serve because of physical or mental health problems or disabilities. Students are exempt as long as they are attending school.

Just sayin': He may want to stay in school as long as possible. And defecting may not be an option if he has relatives still living in Iran.
