But the GM had been preparing for such a moment since the weekend, and hours later obtained slick-fielding Doug Mientkiewicz from the Red Sox for Single-A first-base prospect Ian Bladergroen.
The 30-year-old Mientkiewicz, a 2001 Gold Glove winner, batted a combined .238 with six homers and 35 RBI in 391 at-bats with the Twins and Red Sox.
