Yeah that is a pretty good price. But, I dunno, I'd still rather do it myself. Maybe it's just the satisfaction of knowing I put it all together. The best thing to do is wait for some crazy rebates to come out. I got my 250gb beast for around 80 dollars after rebate. Then I got a nice little case for 25. With the money I saved I took my girl friend out to dinner. :pimp:

Building your own sounds fun and worth the savings, but I don't know if I would trust myself to do it correctly. I'm pretty good with a screwdriver, but...

I was hoping for some great post-holiday sales but haven't had the time to do any shopping. If anyone sees some good deals, let me know.

In the meantime, my laptop (well, the one I stole from Manfred) is hating me for stuffing it full of music!

Thanks for the link, Tones. We are indeed still looking.

Manfred's computer looks to have a USB 1.1 (it's about 4 years old), so we might just wait until he gets a new computer before we invest in another hard drive.

One question:

I work on a laptop, and Manfred is on a desktop. We have the two computers networked to each other through a wireless router, but if we connect the external hard drive to Manfred's computer, will I be able to access it from my laptop? Is there a way to network it so that I too can access it? (That might be a stupid question, but I don't know much about this!)

Can you access files on Manfreds PC now?

If so, I will bet you will be able to access the external drive... may need slight tweaking... maybe not .. depends on how the networking was configured

PS An ideal use of the external drive would be for you and Manfred to both use the external drive to back up files on your individual laptops to it

You can always buy a USB 2.0 and/or Firewire PCI Card for his machine.

Yes you can set up a folder and/or drive as a shared resource available to anyone on the network.

BTW what operating system is on each machine?

Oops almost forgot, there are external drives out there now that act as NAS (network attached storage) that would connect directly to the network and not an individual machine, allowing it to be accessed by anyone on the network.

Thanks for the help, guys. We're both working on Windows XP Dells. I can access his shared drive but not his C drive. I thought about getting separate external drives for each machine, but if we can just get one and both access it, we would rather do that. I will check out the NAS drives.

As mentioned above, you can enable Sharing for the entire drive. I just tried it on mine and it works fine. I have a Western Digital USB Hard Drive 250 GB Model WD2500B015 purchased through Dell for around $200. I don't see why another drive would be any different as far as the ability to share over the network goes.

OK, we just ordered one. It's a Maxtor 250GB for $145! It got great reviews; the only complaints were that it doesn't have an on-off switch (which we don't care about) and that it is ugly (which we don't care about). So, we'll see if I can figure out how to configure it as a shared drive!

We also got a PCI card for Manfred's computer, so thanks for suggesting that, Muck. I didn't realize how cheap they were.

We just received the hard drive today. I couldn't believe how easy it was to set up. And designating shared folders was a piece of cake. Now I just have to figure out if I can transfer my iTunes library files without losing song ratings, etc.
