I'm looking to buy ~200 GB external hard drive. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Get one of the Seagates that comes with USB AND 1394 cabling.

You can find them at less than 70c per GB at sizes greater than 300GB.
Typically there are rebates that get you down to or below that price per GB range, plus most Seagates come with very workable back-up software.

EDIT -Did I mention the Seagates are nice and quiet?

Actually, Seagate is the one we're looking at. It seemed to get good ratings, and the price is right. It's good to hear that it's quiet.

Thanks.

Seagate just bought Maxtor so your choices are now limited.

I built my own also. I have a one drive set up at work in a case with fans via USB. At home I have a two drive arrangement that connects via firewire. You can never have enough storage.

One thing to think about. A noisy external drive may mean fans which is a good thing for hard drives. I had an external 40GB drive with no fans that ran continuously for a few years. One day it just stopped working. The external drive I bulit has two cooling fans and has been running like a champ for almost two years now.

Buffalotech makes a cool stoarge device that acts like a storage server on your network. You can save 1 TB depending on your configuration. It is not cheap but if you have a lot of valuable photos or tOSU vids it is an option.

Not really in the short term. It's going to take a good bit of time before the effects of the acquisition filter down to the consumer level.

Using NorthShore as an example, for multiple drives (or if you have other USB devices that suck up bandwidth) firewire is definitely the way to go since it uses discreet channels. However for a single drive set-up you'll most likely not see much difference between Firewire and USB 2.0.

The best way to go (price wise) for getting an external hard drive is to build it yourself. I know a lot of people have a fear of playing with electronics but it's actually a lot easier than you'd think. Go buy a huge hard drive. Then just get a good case off of newegg.com or somthing. A 300 gig hard drive I've seen as low as 125 dollars and a case to match will cost you about 30 for usb and maybe 50 for a usb and firewire connection. Putting them together is about as easy as plugging a lamp into a wall, and then screwing the thing shut.
