Authorities: One killed, apparently a suicide

NORMAN, Oklahoma (AP) -- One person was killed in an explosion near a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday night in what authorities said appeared to be a suicide.

The blast, in a traffic circle about 100 yards from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, could be heard by some in the crowd of 84,000, but university President David Boren said no one inside the stadium was ever in danger.

"We are apparently dealing with an individual suicide, which is under full investigation," Boren said in a statement. There was no information about the person who was killed, and no reports of any other injuries.

A police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast. The area near the stadium was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs.

Jaclyn Hull, an OU freshman who left the game shortly before the explosion, said she saw "a little bit of smoke, about as much as you would see coming up from a grill."

Officers cordoned off an area west of the stadium after the explosion and nobody was allowed out of the stadium for about a half-hour after the blast, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m., about halftime of the Sooners' game against Kansas State. The game continued.

Obviously very early and some facts will emerge and others will change. Considering there were more than one devices, it doesn't sound to me like just a suicide.

Scary stuff.

Student identified in blast outside football game

Monday, October 3, 2005; Posted: 12:56 p.m. EDT (16:56 GMT)

NORMAN, Oklahoma (AP) -- A University of Oklahoma student with "emotional difficulties" was identified Sunday as the person who apparently committed suicide near a packed football stadium using an explosive attached to his body.

The remains were believed to be those of Joel Henry Hinrichs III, according to Salvador Hernandez, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oklahoma.

University President David Boren has said the blast was an apparent suicide.

"We know that he has had what I would call emotional difficulties in the past," Boren said. "There is certainly no evidence at this point which points to any other kind of motivation other than his personal problems."

Hinrichs, 21, was killed when the explosive device detonated Saturday evening near Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where more than 84,000 people were watching a football game between the Oklahoma Sooners and Kansas State.

No spectators were injured. The game continued without interruption, and no announcement was made until the final minutes. Spectators were kept from leaving until about 30 minutes after the blast.

Part of the student apartment complex where Hinrichs lived was evacuated after the explosion. Boren said residents would not be allowed to return until authorities knew the area was safe.

"They're going through everything with a fine-toothed comb," he said.

Whoa...The possible punchlines for this are unlimited!! Maybe his girlfriend broke up with him because he has a problem with premature detonation. But, I'll wait until we find out if he recently changed his name to Abdul Muhammad Al'Zarhahihiha III after a pilgrimage to Crapistan, before joining in.

For those who don't like the added security...

For those who might think the added security at the games is an inconvenience, there are reports that this guy tried several times to get into the stadium, but was refused entry when he did not allow security to check his bag...luckily all of the security held to the same standard. I have also heard the possibility that the bomb may have been radio-controlled, and that this person may have frequented a mosque that Zacarias Moussaoui had been known to be at.

Much more is available here:

Suffice it to say this could be a terrible situation, and that security did the right thing at the stadium.
