PGY stands for Post Graduate Year. It's years after medical school. All pay scale for residents are based on post graduate years. a PGY-2 surgical resident makes the same money as a PGY-2 family practice resident.

no. PGY has been used for years. I am a 3rd year cardiology fellow which puts me as PGY-6, even though I already completed one residency.
