It's safe to say college football fans love watching Ohio State, and set viewership records to prove it.

Football fans across the country have proven to be interested in watching the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes try for another championship run. Whether they love Ohio State, or love to hate them, they are definitely watching and have already showed up in impressive numbers for the season opener.

The first game of the season was a greatly talked about rematch for the Buckeyes and Hokies, as the teams faced off in Blacksburg for a rare Monday night game.

College football's Week 1 matchup on ESPN resulted in some impressive viewership stats.

  • A 6.6 overnight rating, marking a 144% increase from the 2014 Labor Day matchup, and the best rating for a college football game on opening weekend since 2010 across all networks.
  • The most-streamed college football regular-season game on WatchESPN of all time.
  • Across all devices, the Ohio State victory had an average minute audience of 194,000 users and a total of 708,000 unique viewers on WatchESPN, accumulating 41,900,000 million minutes viewed throughout the game. Beating the former record held by the 2014 Iron Bowl featuring Auburn at Alabama.

The game did better than usual among the home team's market as well; Columbus came in as the highest-ranked local market with a 43.4 overnight ranking. This ranking is also Columbus's best for a regular-season college football game ever on ESPN.

Here's the top 10 markets from the anticipated matchup. (I see you Birmingham at No. 4)
