Rose Bowl moving to ESPN in 2011


BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- The Rose Bowl will be televised on ESPN beginning in January 2011, giving the network broadcast rights to all Bowl Championship Series games.

ESPN announced the agreement the Rose Bowl on Friday.

The network had previously said it would air the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar and BCS national championship game as part of a multiyear agreement that also begins in January 2011.

The 2010 Rose Bowl and the 2010 BCS national title game from Pasadena, Calif., will remain on ABC. The Rose Bowl has had a separate media rights agreement from other BCS bowls.

The 2011 season will mark the first time all BCS bowls will be on cable television.

Unless you don't have cable, I seriously doubt you're going to be able to tell the difference between the broadcast on ESPN vs. ABC. It'll be the same personnel, same music. The only thing different is we won't have promos of Pushing Daisies shoved down our throats for 3 straight hours.

How much ESPN have you watched? They even pimp their programming during sportscenter & sport specific shows.

I have a sneaking suspicion too many promos will follow the game to ESPN.

I'm surprised by this development.

If the Big Ten or Pac Ten Champ goes to the BCS Title game, and a team from one of the 5 non-BCS leagues qualifies for the BCS, the Rose Bowl must select that non-BCS league qualifier. This presumably wouldn't include Notre Dame, which is considered a 'BCS team'.

Great news for teams like Utah, TCU, BYU, and Boise State.

BCS tweak provides greater access to Rose Bowl

CHICAGO -- Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says some tweaking to the Bowl Championship Series rules has given greater access to the Rose Bowl to teams from outside the six conferences with automatic BCS bids -- such as Utah.

The Big Ten and Pacific-10 champions are contractually bound to play in the Rose Bowl unless one of those teams qualifies for the national championship game.

Starting with the 2010 season and running through the 2013 season, the first time the Rose Bowl loses one of its conference champions and a team from the so-called non-BCS leagues earns a BCS bid, the Rose Bowl must take that team.
