the family conncetion is strong there...if he leaves the state, Tennessee is a likely destination. OSU is not out of it, but getting a kid like this to leave SEC country is always tough...

Creekside QB Eric Berry to sign with Tennessee

Last Thursday, Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer paid a visit to Creekside High standout Eric Berry's Fairburn home.

Sunday, Berry provided the Vols coach with an early Christmas present when he announced he would sign with the school in February. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback/defensive back is considered the nation's No. 4 prospect and top recruit in the state, according to rivals.com recruiting service.

The majority of the recruiting services list Berry as the No. 1 cornerback in the nation.

He said playing at Tennessee was a natural fit for him.

"The coaches there were great," Berry said. "I like the atmosphere, because it felt like home."

Berry's father, James, was a former running back for the Vols in the 1980s. He said the news sort of shocked his dad, but he felt no pressure to attend the Knoxville school. He chose Tennessee over Georgia, Auburn, Ohio State and Southern Cal.

"He said it was my decision," said Berry, who will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game next month in San Antonio. "I know the coaches wouldn't lie to me, because my dad played there."

Allen Bailey, a senior defensive end at McIntosh County Academy, is now the top prospect in the state who hasn't announced his college choice. Bailey, who is ranked No. 36 overall and No. 2 defensive end in the country, has narrowed his choices to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech. The 6-4, 255-pounder missed the majority of the season with an injury.

Although he will play cornerback in college, Berry also anticipates getting some offensive touches and playing on special teams.

While leading Creekside to the Region 2-AAAA championship and the quarterfinals, he rushed for 1,544 yards and passed for 1,008 more in the Seminoles triple-option offense.

On defense, where he played safety, Berry had 60 tackles and three interceptions. He was the 2005 AAAA 200 meters champion, but was unable to repeat last spring because of a hand injury.

Berry was a four-year starter at quarterback and safety for the Seminoles, and led them to consecutive region championships. He took over the starting quarterback job the fourth game of the 2003 season, and ended his career with a 37-7 record as a starter.

"He is the total package," Creekside coach Kevin Whitley said. "Eric has an excellent work ethic. He did whatever it took to get better."
