Engagement Rings---Price

So I am in the market for an engagement ring. How much do you think one should spend on a ring? How much did you spend on a ring. Seems the market with my friends is around 9k. Does this sound about right? Too much? Not enough?

Also if there are any resident experts on diamonds please send me a PM.

That old __% of your salary or one month's salary or whatever is bullshit. I'd say it depends completely on her and what you think she'll like. Plus, you don't want to set the bar too high for some bling in the future...

I dropped 2g on my sweetie's platinum/.75c diamond ring. She thought it was too much, but she's worth it. :)

Completely agree. Don't get your marriage started off with a sizeable ring payment because you will have other major expenses (such as a down payment on a house) to contend with.

What sucks - most women want a ring bigger than 1 carat now. Go through a broker if you want a sizable ring. Make sure the ring is certified. Also.....I know these rings these ratings....SI1, etc.....I bought my wife a highly certed ring (VVS1, color G, etc....) If you can't see any imperfections with the naked eye than get the ring if it looks good. Nobody is going to view your wife's ring with a jewelry magnifying glass after you get the ring and ladies don't talk about the particulars.

get a solitaire. It's easy to get a lot of carats but they don't mean anything if it takes 10 diamonds in the ring to get them.

I'd go for slightly under 1 karat. Going from 0.97 to 1.01 costs more than it's worth for the sake of saying "it's 1 karat." Nobody will know the difference if it's 0.95 and she can tell all of her friends its a 1 karat ring.

Really depends on the woman. My wife (so weird saying that) rarely wears jewelry so got her a smallish ring (.75 karats, solitaire) and only paid $2,400 for it. She loved it then and she still loves it. You just have to know your woman and what she would want.

FYI - Now I paid $2,400 for the engagement ring but I spent an additional $1,000 on the wedding band for an extra .5 karats of smaller diamonds. Really makes the combo pop! So what I am reminding you is you have a 2nd ring to buy after/if she accepts the first one.

Good luck man, and in case anyone hasn't told you yet, DON'T DO IT!!!
