An unsolicited resume is a tough road. You need to have an internal contact, a network or a good headhunter. The larger companies do use a resume screener looking for keywords and matching your qualifications with the needs. If you have the time you can customize your resume for each job description.

Good luck.

Agree... If an unsolicited resume stands out enough to get you a job, you were probably overqualified and should've aimed higher.

Somebody once told me a great way to build networks starting from scratch. Figure out who would be hiring for the job you want, and call them, or the next level up. Say you are considering moving into that field, and set up an informational meeting just to discuss the pros/cons and get advice. The chance of getting in the door goes way up, and rather than picking apart your qualifications critically, the contact ends up feeling like a mentor. Every time I've done this, the other person brought up job opportunities within the organization or gave me a list of key people to call next - "Tell them I sent you." Heh, heh, heh. Actually, it's a great way to get useful information and find real mentors, two things which don't often happen with traditional interviews.

Generally I think this is true, though the last 6 people I have hired in my department have not been through networking etc... the job market down here, especially what I am looking for is fairly tough to find people in, especially looking for the skill sets that I do.

Yeah, I think this is the exception. If you are looking for a very specific skill set the odds of your buddy Joe knowing someone to fit that bill aren't very good. It will be nice to get up there again and meet some people who know some people who know some people. It never hurts, that is for sure.
