Ed Heintschel's 500th coaching victory last night fit the St. John's Jesuit basketball coach perfectly.
A little humor, a nice halftime adjustment, and minimal fanfare afterward when his Titans had wrapped up a 69-49 City League win over the visiting Rogers Rams.
The humor came from several members of the St. John's student body, who paid homage to Heintschel by donning his trademark blue blazer and sporting salt-and-pepper wigs and fake mustaches.
"I do feel a little old," said Heintschel (500-159 in his 29th season), "because they made an announcement [in school] that they would have bleach ready for the guys' hair to whiten it up.
"Five hundred means you've been around a long time. We've won a lot of games and we've had great players here. This is certainly not about me. This is about a great school and a bunch of great kids who have come through and helped it happen."
