Eastern Washington Eagles (red turf)

I wonder when they'll start embedding LEDs in the grass for marking downs and for the halftime show.

It would be interesting if they could install sensors in the field that could accurately mark the balls "forward progress" (when the whistle blows) in a pile players. They could coat the ball with something that the sensors could detect, etc. This would make determinations of when a first down occurs automatic thus eliminating the controversial "bad spot" and measurements. In addition, it would give an accurate spot as to exactly where the ball went out of bounds and/or if it crossed the goal line, etc.

Well I'm not worried yet. The small schools can do whatever. I'll be worried when big time programs start changing their football fields and basketball courts.

Blame it all on Truck Driver State University.

This isn't directed at you, but just my response. There are a lot of different opinions on the fields and courts and I respect them.

Having said that, I think the Central Arkansas field is bad ass and I also think the Oregon basketball court is bad ass. I know people won't agree with me and that's fine. I feel the designs impart a personality to the fields and arenas. I understand most people think they're gimmicks and that's cool, but I've always liked edgy designs and people that push the edge. "Fuck the norm'" as Rage Against The Machine would say.

It's unfortunate that a team might end up losing a game because of a barely visible half court line at Oregon's court, but that's really a lack of oversight by superiors to not question and discuss that situation beforehand. However, I think the court at Oregon is tastefully done and represents the setting of the Northwestern geography. Granted, I've never been there personally, but from other observations, I think it's appropriate. I like that certain colleges and universities take pride in representing their geographic or cultural areas, like the Buckeyes represent Ohio, the Longhorns represent Texas, the Gators for Florida etc.

Does a purple and gray football field represent Central Arkansas? Not in the same sense, but it does give it a personality. It gives the local community something to talk about and take civic pride in, benefits to a community economic studies can't exactly measure. I think the basketball courts, tastefully done, could see some very cool and cutting edge designs. I think the next step in the FieldTurf renovations is customizing it to give the school another outlet to represent itself to the outside public. We're seeing that already. I also think the purple and gray is a much better color scheme than solid blue or solid red, but I don't mind that universities are experimenting.

That's fine that people like the "retro" fields or even jerseys. I'm just more of an old school guy even though I am still a young guy. That's why I said the small schools can do whatever. They can knock themselves out.

I can't imagine Michigan playing OSU in Ann Arbor with all maize jerseys, in a maize out, and all maize field. Remember Michigan still has midgets and they would basically be invisible on the maize field.

I can't imagine Michigan traveling to Ohio Stadium with an all black or gray field.

It is the same way I feel about jerseys. Michigan, Ohio St, Oklahoma, Penn St., Notre Dame, etc all have nice football uniforms. They haven't changed much over the years but I like those looks. Miami (FL) used to have have some nice jerseys and they fucked that up.

I just can't see a major program changing their field any time soon. I hope not.

This... until the athletic department sees it being profitable. I never thought tOSU would do a different jersey for one game a year, let alone two years in a row. If it happens again this year (barring any commemorative event/team I haven't thought of), then all bets are off.

I'm younger as well, but I love the old school look. You don't go gimmicky unless you need to be noticed.

we wouldn't change the color of the field, we'd just install natural grass and grow it to about a foot, then you'd never find our runningbacks.....

As ugly as a striped field may look, it is slightly better than a solid color that is made to match the uniforms almost exactly, and so provide an absolutely ridiculous environment.

Still, I hope that this doesn't make its way any farther up than Truck Driver U. The basketball courts are actually kind of cool as long as all appropriate lines are visible.

That's my only issue with Oregon's new court, and it manifested itself in the title game of the CBI (or CIT, whichever). The center court line is barely visible making it a big advantage for the team that plays on it regularly.

And wouldn't that match the new black jerseys? :wink2:

The day I see the Buckeyes wearing black jerseys on a scarlet field I'll know it is time to take a header off the stadium bell tower.

The University of Lindenwood-Belleville will have it's first football season this fall and, in an effort to make it unforgettable, the university decided to design an original field striped red and gray to represent the school's colors.

They obviously wanted someone to notice them.
