Things I do, off the top of my head:

  • Check the sellers feedback before committing to buy.
  • Check the bid history on an item you're bidding on to ensure the seller isn't shilling the auction.
  • Confirm all shipping/handling charges before bidding.
  • Use the completed items search feature to find the going rate of something you're about to bid on so that you don't overpay.
  • Use the search feature to try and find a similar item at a lower price. If you find a low Buy It Now price, don't hesitate to jump on it.
  • Set yourself a maximum bid, and don't submit that bid until there is less than 1 minute to go in the auction (snipe).

All good points. There are actually some sniping sites out there that will submit your bid for you sometime in the last 30 seconds (you tell it how long before the end to submit) I use BidNip.com they only charge about .25 to snipe an auction, and it can save you tons of time and money. First you don't have to sit in front of your pc and wait for the auction to end, and second you don't drive up the price by bidding early. By waiting until the last 10 seconds others do not have a chance to respond unless they have already submitted a high bid. I think on BidNip they give you your first 5 snipes free. I would try it out. Great for tickets.

I use esnipe, but haven't bought anything for a while. One of the nice things about sniping is that youcan set you price (top end bid) while not being influenced by 'really wanting" the item. Then just forget about it and wait for the email saying that either you won, or didn't win the auction.

Just a personal preference, and kind of defeats the whole "auction" thing...but I only view and purchase the "Buy it Now" listings. I just don't like wasting my time waiting on an item to close, and even worse...taking a chance of getting outbid at the last minute. Then, I will have ended up wasting my time trying to save a couple of dollars. Time has monetary value to me. I always check feedback, read the complete listing (paying special attention to shipping charges) and only pay via paypal.
