Dwayne Jarrett...What if.?

ShakerBuck

Hall of Fame
If Dwayne Jarrett would have ended up at OSU (by many accounts he had verballed at one point) how differently would our lineup look?

WR

Holmes
Jarrett
Gonzo

would we still have signed Dukes? Lyons? or Lyons may have stayed at Safety

our CBs might have been

Youbouty
Ginn
Everett (nickel?)

may have only signed 1 out of Amos, and Jenkins?

at the end of the day Jarrett is a stud wide receiver in the OSU mold (big).. but we are stacked at wr, and the ripple effect may have made us worse off in the long run.

What if Santonio Holmes would have gone to Miami, Ginn to USC, Zwick to scUM, Hawk to Iowa, Pittman to Pitt, etc.....

See what I'm getting at, it's really beating a dead horse.

Devon Lyons was his equal or better in high school. But, Lyons has been injured and hasn't had his chance ,yet.
You just never know about how injuries will change a player's future.
Maybe Jarrett would have gotten hurt and be in the same boat as Lyons? :(
I have very high hopes for Lyons!

it would be silly to deny that almost any team would be better with Jarrett, but the truth of the matter is that wide receiver is a position at which we do not need any more depth. Probably why he changed his mind to begin with.

let's get this down to a simple question...

you can have ONE receiver...

Santonio or Jarrett...

next question... where's the 'kill thread' icon?

BTW, the NFL scouts have already answered this too...
and they are answering it the same way we are...

I think it's a decent thread, especially since he's arguing that we might be equal/better off without him.

Are you kidding?

You could do this about any player in the United States.

We have who we have and USC has who they have, discussion over.

I don't really know what would be solved by discussing such a topic.

We do lack a big WR right now due to injury (and hall being solid but not dominant)... that's why I think it's decent (not great). We can go back to arguing about the bcs instead, I guess.

We're not 'solving' anything. It's just an interesting conversation. There are a decent amount of times BP talks about what if osu had beaten texas... that doesn't solve anything either but is discussed b/c it's interesting.

What if Morelli had gone to Penn State?

Oh wait... he did... he rode the bench.

What if Ben ROFLberger had come here.... and played Tight End?

My point is, if you are going to play the "What If?" game, you need to at least pick an option with the most dramatic effect.

Consider...

Ohio State rarely uses more than three WR sets. To tell you the truth, I this Gonzo is under used.

While Jarrett IS an upgrade, is Holmes, Jarrett, Ginn going to make THAT big of a difference over Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo? We can barely get an adequate number of throws to the ones we have.

Pick an elite cornerback, tight end or runningback and we're in business. Consider what a difference it would have made to have a true "shut down half the field" corner on a mediocre pass defense. What about a dual-threat tight end that teams had to gameplan against, leaving our receivers free to make more plays? You can't tell me a "change of pace" runningback wouldn't have given Pittman some good rest and really allowed us to ball control against Texas and Penn State.

If you've gotta pick a "what if?" scenerio...make it count. We don't need more receivers to under-utilize.

Ding, ding, ding...We have a winner.

I don't like playing the what if game.

What if Stanley McClover had kept his committment we may not have got Wilson or Worthington

What if Coach T does not call Nugent on is way to Pittsburgh to make his verbal

There are a ton of what ifs.
