Dwan Mathis (QB Temple Owls)

BP Friends - why the difficulty in enrolling him early?
Just curious, I don't really know the rules around this.

Ohio State told him there were hold-ups in his acaedemic requirements needed to enroll early.

If I were Dwan, I'd be skeptical too. That stuff gets hashed out well in advance to make sure this exact issue doesn't happen come signing day. I believe Dwan recognized the inevitable, which is OSU is making a hard push at Fields and wanted to keep their options open.

I believe OSU wanted to put Dwan on ice and see where the Fields recruitment goes. Dwan wanted to sign today. Hence he's a Bulldawg.

Have to have the spots available. Can’t have more than 85 on scholarship at any one time.

Not for the early signing period. You can be over. When the kids sign though, you can do the math on the number of players who are either going to "medically retire" or transfer from the current roster.

Every year we tend be a few spots over in terms of scholarships coming in and what is on the roster. It's just a matter of who will be leaving the team and where their next stop is.

Re: Academic requirements.... USUALLY that’s hashed out in advance... he might have been waiting on a test score or something else... we dont know... It could be like you described but what’s being talked about publically at least is they weren’t putting him on ice (see QB room depth)

Risky if true, but there are worse things than rolling for two or three years with Tate Martell, or, if he's good enough beat him out, Baldwin, if the gamble fails.

This could end up being a huge recruiting blunder unless they feel confident they already have Fields wrapped up, or already do behind the scenes and that's why they slow-played Mathis.
Not sure how this is OSU fault IF... IF its true and OSU couldn’t guarantee him an early enrollee spot and he didn’t want to wait?

I know big IFs...
