DVD and VHS recorder question

All the DVD/VCR Combos I've seen were only DVD players and regular VCR. I'm sure there is some out there that have the DVD recorder and VCR. But they are most likely very expensive.

Its just easier to buy a DVR recorder and take the output of the VCR into the DVD and do it that way.

EDIT: I found that apparently the cost on these have went down.

Take a look at this page. It lists some of the best on the market. In the beginning it says you can copy things using them. So take it for what its worth. I guess you can.

Given that the output from a VHS will by definition be Standard TV why not just pump the recorder feed from a standard VHS player into a DVD recorder (HD or regular as you see fit, though as the VHS feed is lo-res, why bother with the high dollar discs)?

One other minor glitch to concern yourself with, most combo devices cannot be consolidated into an existing "Master" control as they have no one unique code representing the dual functions of the devices native remote control.

You should be able to copy SOME VHS cassettes to DVD, regardless of wheter you use a combo unit or two separate devices. The only holdup is copyright protection, which is built in to some commercial VHS movies, just as it is built in to all commercial DVD releases. About 1/2 to 2/3 of commercial VHS cassettes can be copied to DVD from what I've seen - and Disney VHS releases almost without exception definitely cannot.

My mother got a DVD recorder back in the autumn with the intention of not only recording from TV, but also backing up her VHS movies and putting them away to save space in her entertainment center. The results of her attempt are reflected in what I said in the preceding paragraph - over the course of trying to backup a few hundred VHS cassettes.

It's kinda disappointing that that's the case. Technically, she is entitled to make backups of movies she owns for her own use. I can understand wanting to prevent piracy, but seriously, in this age of rapid transfer, high quality digital piracy, are bootleggers really gonna bother with bootlegging from a VHS source anymore?

I have seen these devices with both DVD and VHS recorders. Would I be able to copy DVD's from VHS tapes with this device?

Your video quality is going to suck doing it that way. Your best bet would be to join Netfix or some other way to rent movies for cheap and rip them with your computer. That way you'll get the near dvd quality. If you don't have one you can get a dvd burner for your computer for <$30. I have yet to find a cheap way to pull quality video off of VHS or TV. If you are worried about legal problems DVD Shrink allows you to rip just the movie from a DVD so you can say you converted it from the VHS tape that you own.

Ok , I am lost because I am just starting to look into dvd burning.
I have no equipment or knowledge about burning dvd,s from vcr tape,s ,existing dvd's or downloading game tapes from here.
I have asked about downloading and understand that I need a dazzle machine and a dvd burner.
so what all do i need? Does anyone have a good setup as far as hardware and software goes.
Are there certains specs I want to have, such as newer units that have higher speeds. From this thread I gather that dvd burners can come separately or with a vcr player also. Is this better or is just having a dvd burner best.
what else is needed in either case as misc needs? cables? software?
I need lots of help.
Please and thank you.
