Re: Luke Fickell, 36, might be a "hot" commodity in college coaching, but so far, he's happy at OSU.

Luke Fickell has felt the pull. He has heard the whispers.

At age 36, the Ohio State assistant coach owns a reputation as an excellent recruiter and a young "up-and-comer."

He is co-defensive coordinator with Jim Heacock, but he has been on the staff for nine years now, and it does not appear that Heacock or coach Jim Tressel is going anywhere soon.

We are undoubtedly fortunate to have had him this long. After this award, it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a good head coaching offer and be gone. Heck, he deserves it.

I think it would be a fantastic move for a school like WVU or possibly even Miami to offer Fickell. He has the recruiting ties not only Ohio, but Mid-Atlantic and a little in South Florida. Also, if he could bring on Taver Johnson or Paul Haynes as Defensive Coordinator, and possibly Petersen or Hazell as Offensive Coordinator, that would be an absolute coup for the school. Now, I couldn't see most of those assistants going...especially Petersen or Hazell, but it would give that school quite the core. They would automatically be able to recruit Ohio. Factor in some possible coaching staffers like Steve Tovar who has recruited Texas, and maybe even Marcus Freeman or Mike Tressel from MSU... and he could piece together a nice little staff with deep ties. If the school committed to him, then I don't see why he wouldn't return the loyalty, that should pay off in the long term.

As for potential replacements for Lynch, keep an eye on and an ear out for Ohio State co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Luke Fickell; there?s an early buzz out there that he could wind up being a very serious candidate for the position.

I don't think he would be interested in Indiana. He needs to go somewhere that the program will eventually win and the Hoosier FB job is not one of those programs. WVU would be if they are interested.

for the Miami of Ohio job....

Names to watch this time could include Luke Fickell, Ohio State co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Fickell recently was named American Football Coaches Association national assistant coach of the year (Football Bowl Subdivision). Fickell, a Columbus native, is a 1997 Ohio State grad who was a four-year defensive line starter for the Buckeyes

But it's cold right now so it's hard to show off those advantages. Better get all the recruits to games early in the season. From what I hear you can sit in the McDonalds and watch the advantages walk up and down the street.

Luke Fickell is LB Coach of the Year - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State's Luke Fickell has been named the 2010 FootballScoop Linebackers Coach of the Year. The award is presented by SpeedTracs.

Under the tutelage of Fickell, senior linebackers Ross Homan and Brian Rolle earned First Team All-Big Ten honors. The duo produced 133 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss, forced 3 fumbles, and intercepted 3 passes. The Buckeyes finished 2nd nationally in total defense (250 YPG) and 3rd nationally in scoring defense (13.3 PPG). Fickell also serves as co-defensive coordinator.

The Ohio State defense excelled at creating takeaways and eliminating explosive plays. In fact, the Buckeyes led the nation by allowing just 11 plays all season for 30+ yards. The 29 takeaways were 12th best in the country.

Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel told FootballScoop, "Luke is continually aware of each player's development and makes adjustments and corrections immediately. He will not accept anything less than someone's best effort and execution. His players are extremely well prepared for football and for life. We are very proud that he is an Ohio State coach and graduate."

Ohio State finished 11-1 and earned a trip to the All State Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 4th, where the Buckeyes will play Arkansas.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Fickell, Dan Conley - Syracuse and Tony Tademy - TCU) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the 2010 winners.

Previous winners of the Linebackers Coach of the Year award are Bill McGovern (Boston College, 2008) and Bob Fraser (Rutgers, 2009).

Report: Miami considering Ohio State, Nebraska assistants

Ohio State co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Luke Fickell and Nebraska offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson are among the candidates to become Miami University?s next head football coach, according to CollegeFootballTalk.

The report cites a source, ?with knowledge of the search.? According to the website, ?the source would not go so far as to say that the two are finalists for the position, rather stating that both, ?are among a handful who are definitely in the mix.??

Fickell is in his ninth season on the Buckeyes? coaching staff. He is Columbus native who was a four-year starter at nose guard for Ohio State. Last month, the American Football Coaches Association named Fickell the Assistant Coach of the Year for the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Watson is in his fifth season at Nebraska and fourth in his current role there. He has head coaching experience (Southern Illinois) and was an assistant at Miami from 1987-1993. During that time he coached tight ends, quarterbacks and served as the program?s recruiting coordinator.

Miami tapped defensive backs coach Lance Guidry to serve as the RedHawks? interim head coach after Mike Haywood accepted the Pittsburgh job last week. Miami plays Middle Tennessee State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala.

Buzz: Ohio State secured another top 12 recruiting class on National Signing Day when it landed the nation's No. 2 prospect, Richmond (Va.) linebacker [/URL]Curtis Grant. It was the persistence of Fickell that allowed the Buckeyes to outlast Florida, North Carolina and Virginia for the five-star prospect. The Buckeyes' linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator was the lead recruiter on Grant, putting in the day-to-day work that eventually landed the headliner. But Fickell had started bolstering his linebacker group even before the addition of Grant. He landed four-star Ryan Shazier out of Florida along with three-stars Conner Crowell of Maryland and Ejuan Price of Pennsylvania. He was also the lead assistant in the recruitment of three-star Plantation (Fla.) defensive back Jeremy Cash, who spurned in-state programs Florida State and Miami to sign with the Buckeyes.
