I am currently on my new Dell laptop (notebook). It just showed up at my door today. Anybody had any good or bad experiences with Dell? This is my first Dell and my first notebook.

My dial up still sucks, but my old desktop was a 7 year old Compac (junk.)

Dell is typically better than most other companies (a lesser evil, if you will). Get their comprehensive warranty (especially for a laptop), and life shouldn't be too bad. I had a friend who dumped milk on his (pretty humorous, obviously it died upon impact, and then milk started pouring out the vents on the side, and an awful burnt milk scent started).

we are a dell shop here, we have about 65 desktops, plus a few laptops and about 10 servers, we haven't had too many problems at all, pretty good overall

I just read that entire thread and about pissed myself. Ralphy sounds like he was the beginning of the end.

That story reminded me exactly of my past conversations with Sprint. You see, 4 years ago they turned me over to a collection agency for $31.00. I have never missed one payment or even been late. I have made several attempts to get this removed. However, it is very difficult when no one there speaks understandable english. To this day, they show no record of ever turning me in to any collection agency...but that damned $31.00 is still on my credit report.

Do you speak Swahili? Hindi? Erdu? They used to have incredible support, but it's been shipped overseas. The last person I talked to sounded like my Calc teacher at OSU. I didn't understand either one, but they were very polite and patient.

On the other hand, we've owned four Dells, three PCs and a laptop, and had very reliable service. When Moeller HS went to all laptops each freshman and each teacher was given a new Dell. For reasons only another administrator would understand, the principal switched to IBM stink pads for the next freshman group. The NEW IBMs had twice as many repairs as the 1 year old Dells.

THey are pretty decent machines... number one thing to remember, they are fragile... so... be very careful with it... close it before you pick it up to move it, always use both hands so you don't flex the case, etc...

another dell shop here. ~250 desktops, ~100 laptops and assorted servers. dell pc's are better than most. compaq's are of satan. last company i worked at was a compaq shop. 1 in 6 desktops didn't work out of the box. the company based support for dell is much better now that it is back in the states. though i think the individual support is still based in non english speaking countries... good luck with that .
