the OSU coaching staff is continuing to groom defensive lineman Todd Denlinger for those occasions when they want to add a little beef to the position, particularly in short yardage situations or coming off the goal line.

"At practice I'm wearing mostly the red jersey taking mostly defensive reps. When they need me for a little bit of tight end they'll throw me in there," said Denlinger.

"Today (the day of the jersey scrimmage) I was in that black jersey taking a lot of reps on both sides of the ball. It was fun doing that because it's a new experience for me.

"I'm just trying to help the team. It's a brand new position for me but every rep I do get I feel like I'm getting better. I'm able to learn from the film, work on my steps, work on my hands, it's pretty much a brand new position for me. Coach Peterson is getting me in there more and more."

props to Todd for a key play in the game...

Denlinger can catch

Defensive lineman Todd Denlinger's interception late in the second quarter helped break the game open, as his 18-yard return set up a 38-yard drive to a touchdown that increased the lead to 24-7 just before halftime.

The interception also proved something for Denlinger, who has been used some as a tight end this season.

"Now I can tell the coaches they can see my hands a little bit and maybe catch a pass," he said. "That's probably not going to happen, but I'm just doing what I have to do."

On that play, a zone blitz, he dropped off the line to quarterback Ben Chappell's left, and Chappell did not appear to see him.

"The other defensive linemen got great pressure, he had to throw the ball away, and I was there to clean it up," Denlinger said.

Lol it never fails...as soon as a big man gets his hands on the ball, the coach will never hear the end of it  But still that was a great play by Todd, he is having one heck of a season so far.

Todd DenlingerThe lasting memory from Ohio State's 33-14 win over Indiana? Terrelle Pryor's four touchdowns? Brandon Saine's 113 rushing yards? Rob Rose tackling the Hoosiers' punter for a safety? Let's go with nose guard Todd Denlinger rumbling 14 yards while returning the first interception of his career.
"It was a little awkward," Denlinger said. "It wasn't a natural feeling. I'm anxious to see how I looked on film running." About as well as any guy wearing the No. 92 can look after an interception.

Meet a Buckeye: Todd Denlinger

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Todd Denlinger has grown a beard. He now looks the part of not only one of the older leaders of the Ohio State defense, but also an avid outdoorsman who knows what he's doing with a shotgun on his shoulder.

The senior defensive tackle from Troy got his first interception a couple of weeks ago at Indiana and has been used as a tight end a few times this year in short-yardage situations. He hopes that versatility will help him land a job in the NFL next season but, if that doesn't work out, he has spent his college years working on a contingency plan:

Q: You're known for being a hunter. What's your best trophy kill to date?

A: Last year I shot a 12-point buck on my family's property back home in Troy.

Q: Where is the mounted head?

A: It's back home up on the wall in my dad's den. I think he's claiming it as his own, but it's mine.

Q: What's your career head count?

A: That was my fourth deer. Football season definitely takes a toll on it, of course, because of when deer season comes. I'd like to get out there more. That's why I'm more of a pheasant hunter and a rabbit hunter. I grew up rabbit hunting with my dad. Deer hunting is just something I do when I have a little bit of time around Thanksgiving.

Todd Denlinger had to pull up while running his forty-yard dash. He tweaked his hamstring, but it was nothing too serious. He wasn't sure he was going to be able to make it all the way anyway, and he didn't want to push it because he still wanted to be able to do the rest of the drills, which he did. He got up 26 reps on the bench press, which was about where he expected to be. Interestingly, a sometime two-way player as a Buckeye, he sees a possibility on the offensive side of the ball in the NFL as well.

?To be honest, I think I can play on both sides of the ball,? he said. ?I think I can maybe even be molded into an offensive lineman. Maybe be an early-down defensive tackle. The list kind of goes on and on what I could do. I think I?d be a good asset to a team. I may not be the best athlete in these types of drills, but at the same time, I can bring a lot of other things to a team.?
