DT Ryan "Big Grease" Pickett (Super Bowl Champion)

Pickett, Raji hurt in victory
Nose tackles could sit against Chicago
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Posted: Dec. 8, 2009

Green Bay ? The Green Bay Packers will be holding their breath a little bit through Wednesday morning as they monitor the health of their top two nose tackles, starter Ryan Pickett and backup B.J. Raji.

Pickett strained his right hamstring, according to coach Mike McCarthy, with 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter Monday night when Tramon Williams intercepted Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco in the end zone.

Raji limped off the field with a left ankle sprain with 4:16 left in the third quarter. He did return to the game and didn't seem to be affected.

But the prospect of losing one or both of the Packers' strongest players against the run - especially Pickett - has McCarthy a little worried.

"It's definitely something I am concerned about," McCarthy said Tuesday of Pickett. "His history - every player has history with injuries - he has come back relatively fast in the past, so that's what I am hopeful for."

McCarthy said Pickett will miss some practice during this short week.

Pickett is the anchor of the Packers' run defense, which ranks fourth in the league (87.2 yards per game). Even some of the Packers' defensive coaches have said nose tackle is the most important position in the 3-4 defense.

Considering nose tackles depend on their lower body for leverage, one would think a hamstring injury would be significant. McCarthy said that may not be the case.

"It depends on who you talk to," McCarthy said. "Some people think those guys don't even have hamstrings and why are they pulling them? I'm kidding. I think in talking to Ryan about the injury, he got extended and he said he tried to jump over a player on a pass rush. Yeah, definitely, you need your legs to play in this game, especially in the trenches."

Green Bay Packers hope NT Ryan Pickett returns for game vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
By Rob Demovsky ? [email protected] ? December 18, 2009

bilde

The Packers hope they have nose tackle Ryan Pickett on the field against the Steelers on Sunday, and not watching from the sideline. File/Press-Gazette

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers believes Ryan Pickett is one of the keys to the team's near-dominant rushing defense, but not having the nose tackle last week at Chicago didn?t seem to hurt the cause.

The Bears rushed for only 59 yards on 17 carries (a 3.5-yard average) and did almost no damage up the middle, where Pickett normally is on patrol.

Still, the Packers desperately want their best run stuffer back for Sunday?s game at Pittsburgh.

Pickett, who is nursing a hamstring injury that occurred late in the Dec. 7 game against Baltimore, practiced on a limited basis Friday and was listed as questionable on the injury report. He appears to have a much better chance of playing against the Steelers than he did last week against the Bears, when he was listed as doubtful going into the game.

?A big presence inside like Ryan, you see people try to play a 3-4 defense and they have a little guy inside trying to stop the run, I really believe that?s been one of the real strengths of this team,? said Capers, the Packers? defensive coordinator. ?It?s where everything starts for us, and he?s been a big factor.?

Pickett concluded three days of testing on Friday, when he went through every drill in practice, although his reps in each one were limited. He said he wasn?t sore after Friday?s workout, but coach Mike McCarthy wasn?t ready to declare Pickett will play against the Steelers.

?He went through a three-day process, and really how he feels (today) will be the determining factor if Ryan Pickett goes in the game,? McCarthy said. ?The feedback was positive, but we?re dealing with a hamstring, so the day after the work will be the final hurdle.?

If Pickett plays, he said he will have to find ways to stay loose on the sideline. He?ll need his hamstring stretched between series.

?You?ve got to keep it warm; you?ve got to stay active,? Pickett said. ?I can?t just go on the sideline and sit down on the bench like I normally do. I have to stay active and ride the (stationary) bike to keep it warm.?

Green Bay Packers notebook: NT Ryan Pickett will rest sore hamstring
By Rob Demovsky ? [email protected] ? December 23, 2009

The Green Bay Packers are trying a different approach to nurse nose tackle Ryan Pickett?s hamstring back to health.

After missing the Dec. 13 game against Chicago, Pickett returned in a limited fashion in Sunday?s loss at Pittsburgh. The problem was, Pickett reinjured the hamstring despite playing only a handful of snaps against the Steelers. His return to a limited role came after three days of extensive testing both in practice and with the strength and conditioning staff last week.

This week, they?re going to try something else.

?Ryan took a step backwards, so we?ll see what happens,? Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday. ?He?s feeling it, and we?re going to take a more cautious approach this time.?

Pickett didn?t practice Wednesday and probably won?t go Thursday, either. The Packers aren?t practicing Friday because of Christmas but will hold a longer-than-usual workout on Saturday. Perhaps they could try to do something then that would help determine whether he will play against Seattle on Sunday, but even that seemed unlikely on Wednesday. The best option for Pickett might be to take another week off.

?I don?t feel worse than I felt (last week), but I did have a little setback, and I?m a little sore,? Pickett said. ?We?re just going to be aggressive with the treatment and rest it a little more instead of testing it as much.?

Packers' Pickett Ready to Return for Playoffs
Updated: Jan 06, 2010

The Green Bay Packers finished #1 in run defense without one of their top run stuffers in the final four games of the season.

But nose tackle Ryan Pickett was back at practice Wednesday. His hamstring injury is much better, and he's expected to suit up on Sunday.

"I like to practice," Pickett said. "I mean, it's a time to get the kinks worked out and work on crafting your game, so I feel that I missed on that part. But I'm pretty old and have been around, so I don't think I drop off that much. Just looking to get out there and work on things, and as for my game I will get it back."

Nose tackle, Packers talking

Packers nose tackle Ryan Pickett says he would like to finish his career in a Green Bay uniform.

Green Bay ? Nose tackle Ryan Pickett and the Packers have had substantive talks about a new contract that he hopes eventually will keep him in Green Bay for the rest of his career.

"They want to get a deal done and I want to get a deal done," Pickett said Friday. "They've been talking three weeks, a month probably. I think he (agent Kennard McGuire) is thinking after the season we'll really talk."

Pickett, who in the back of his mind has wondered if Sunday would be the final game of his Green Bay career, will become an unrestricted free agent in March with the expiration of his four-year, $14 million contract. That deal contained signing and roster bonuses totaling $5.5 million.

"It probably will be more than that," said Pickett, referring to his next contract. "I know if I go to free agency there's not too many D-linemen in the market this year.

"Really, I'm just trying to play this season out and see what's best for me when that route comes. But right now, I just want to play for the Packers."

The 30-year-old Pickett said he will be back in the starting lineup against Arizona. He missed three games and played just five snaps in a fourth because of a hamstring injury.

Rookie B.J. Raji, the ninth pick in the draft, has replaced Pickett. Although Raji made a few plays, several scouts have said he wasn't as hard to move or as disciplined in his gap control as Pickett.

The Packers apparently value Pickett highly as one of their four top defensive linemen. One of the four, end Johnny Jolly, also doesn't have a contract for next year and is facing felony drug charges in Houston.

Pickett said it's up to the Packers to decide a role for Raji.

"Whatever they do, it don't ever hurt to have a lot of good D-linemen," he said. "You put him and me, me and him, whatever you want to do. I'm sure they can work something out."

For the first time in club history, Green Bay led the NFL in run defense, an accomplishment near and dear to Pickett's heart.

"At my age you want to be a part of something great," said Pickett. "We've got the No. 1 run defense and we've got a chance to come back and be the No. 1 overall next year. All of us would like to stay here."

Ryan Pickett, NT: Made a seamless transition to nose in the 3-4 and was a major reason the team led the league in rushing defense (allowing 83.3 yards per game). Recorded only 47 tackles (34 fewer than last season), but ate up blockers so the linebackers could pile up tackles. Missed the final three regular-season games because of a hamstring injury and might not have been 100 percent for the playoff game, when the Cardinals were able to run the ball. Scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, there?s mutual interest in him returning next season.

Ryan Pickett: Anchor of NFL's No. 1-ranked run defense. Recently turned 30 but hopes to play at least five more seasons and is confident that he can. Unselfish team leader. His range isn't quite what it used to be, but he's still one of the best at holding firm against double-teams. First on the D-line, for the third time in four years, in tackles per snap.

Pickett, others wait on team, new CBA

Ryan Pickett (right) would like to remain with the Green Bay Packers, and it appears he?ll have a good chance of doing so.

Green Bay ? Ryan Pickett isn't big on change.

Green Bay's mammoth nose tackle would certainly move his family if the opportunity and the money were right. But if Pickett had his choice, he won't be changing addresses this off-season.

Pickett is one of five Packers scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 5. Eight others are currently restricted free agents, but they could become UFA's if a new collective bargaining agreement somehow takes place.

Pickett seems to be high on the Packers' priority list, and he certainly hopes the two sides can make a deal before free agency begins.

"Hopefully we can get something done because I love it here," said the 30-year-old Pickett, the father of three daughters. "My wife, the kids, the schools, we love it.

"My oldest is 5, and she's in kindergarten. We've got a good feeling for the whole area. Moving's a big-time pain and right now everybody's comfortable. Hopefully, I can stay."

This promises to be one of the more interesting free-agent periods in recent memory.

Right now, if the players and owners can't agree on a new collective bargaining agreement, a player would need six years of service to become an unrestricted free agent. If a new CBA is reached, players with expiring contracts would be free.

For Green Bay, Pickett along with tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, linebacker Aaron Kampman and running back Ahman Green will be unrestricted free agents no matter what happens.

If a new CBA is struck, safeties Nick Collins, Atari Bigby and Derrick Martin, offensive linemen Jason Spitz and Daryn Colledge, defensive end Johnny Jolly, cornerback Will Blackmon and fullback John Kuhn would all become UFAs.

"Right now, it's wait and see," Pickett said. "I mean, they could end up with a lot of (UFAs).

"If there's a new deal, (the Packers) will have more (UFAs) than I've ever seenWhether they go with me or not, there's a lot of fish to feed and a lot of stuff to get done."

In lean market, Peppers, Dansby are biggest prizes

NFL free agency will be less frantic this year. With no collective bargaining in place, only free agents with six or more years of service are unrestricted. Meanwhile, some prominent free agents are likely to be designated with the franchise tag by the Feb. 25 deadline.

"There are not as many free agents out there this year," Texans owner Bob McNair told reporters at a news conference last week.

Things will remain fluid between now and the start of free agency on March 5. Some free agents will agree to new contracts. Some veterans will be released, once teams decide that their 2010 contract terms are too costly.

Safety Darren Sharper, a 13-year NFL veteran, played in 14 regular-season games for the Saints in 2009.But as things stand today, here is how things are shaping up for the top unrestricted free agents:

Expect them to be tagged and stay put

Ryan Pickett, DT, Packers. He wants to stay in Green Bay, and the Packers want him to stay. That means he is staying, either with a new deal or with the tag. Tag number: $7.003 million.

Packers expected to tag Pickett
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 23, 2010

The Packers are joining in on the defensive tackle franchise tag party.

In one of the first mild surprises of the offseason, Green Bay is expected to retain Ryan Pickett by using the franchise tag, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Pickett and the Packers have been discussing a long-term deal, but the team will use the tag if they can't consummate the extension by Thursday.

The move isn't really a huge surprise. With no salary cap implications, it's almost crazy not to use the tag to retain the rights to a quality starter.

Defensive tackles Vince Wilfork and Aubrayo Franklin have already been tagged, while Casey Hampton is expected to later in the week. We wonder if the agents for Franklin, Hampton, and Pickett will wait for Wilfork to set the market at the position.

Ryan Pickett made $2.975 million last season, but will get $7.003 million with the Packers' franchise tag.
$7 million move may cause trouble
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
Posted: Feb. 24, 2010

The Green Bay Packers assured themselves that they'll have one of their key free agents on board when the regular season starts, but they did not do much to improve a potential sticky situation in the months that precede it.

Moving to lock up his starting nose tackle, general manager Ted Thompson informed Ryan Pickett Wednesday that he had placed the franchise tag on him, effectively removing the unrestricted free agent from the market.

The tag not only allows the Packers to match any offer Pickett receives from another team, it also mandates that they receive two first-round draft choices as compensation if they let him go. There isn't a team in the NFL that would give up two first-round picks for a 30-year-old nose tackle, so Pickett will remain a Packer.

By putting the tag on him, the Packers have to offer him a one-year deal worth the average of the five highest-paid players at defensive tackle as of last season, which comes to $7.003 million. That's far more than the $2.975 million Pickett made last year while starting 13 games and compiling 47 tackles (25 solo) and one pass break-up.

But the Packers ranked No. 1 in the NFL in run defense in part because of Pickett, and big men are proving to be coveted, judging from the franchise tags given to New England's Vince Wilfolk, San Francisco's Aubrayo Franklin and Oakland's Richard Seymour.

Thompson released a statement that gave no insight into how far along the sides got in negotiations prior to using the tag or whether he expected a long-term deal anytime soon. The deadline for placing a franchise or transition tag is 4 p.m. Thursday.

"Ryan has been a good teammate and productive player for us on the field and also a good representative of the Packers in the community," Thompson said. "We look forward to having him be a part of our future."

Packers GM Discusses Putting Franchise Tag on Pickett
Updated: Feb 26, 2010

We're are just two months away from the draft. The Packers will have the 23rd pick in the first round.

This week the Packers brass is in Indianapolis. Ted Thompson and the Packers staff are at this weekend's 2010 NFL scouting combine.

General manager Thompson made news Wednesday locking up one of the team's free agents. By naming nose tackle Ryan Pickett as the team's franchise player, they've virtually taken him off the free agent market.

"Ryan, he's a good player. He's been very productive for us. He's a good guy. He's someone I like personally very much, I think he's a good teammate," Thompson told Action 2 Sports.

The franchise tag buys the Packers a little time.

"We have differences of opinion right now on how to get this thing done but this gives us an opportunity to continue to talk," Thompson said.

"That's the whole point is to try to get in a position where, at some point, we get to a place where everything's good for the Packers and it's good for Ryan."

Packers keep Pickett, Collins
By John Clayton
ESPN.com

The Green Bay Packers franchised nose tackle Ryan Pickett with the idea of keeping him for at least one year.

Now, they can keep him for four years. Pickett agreed to a four-year, $28 million contract on the same day the Packers reached a three-year extension on safety Nick Collins.

Collins' agents, Dave Butz and Alan Herman, have confirmed a report on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Web site that Collins' deal was for $23.4 million.

Pickett made the successful conversion to nose tackle last year and helped make the Packers one of the top defenses in the league last season.

"We have continued to talk to Ryan and his representatives and are pleased we were able to sign Ryan to this extension," general manager Ted Thompson said. "He has been a key part of our success on defense, and we look forward to having Ryan be a part of our future in Green Bay."

Pickett excited to be in Green Bay for the long haul
By Brian Carriveau
March 12, 2010

GREEN BAY ? Ryan Pickett woke up this morning not expecting he'd be signing a long-term contract extension with the Green Bay Packers. He was just going attend the Packers' annual Fan Fest at Lambeau Field like he'd been planning for weeks.

"Right before noon this morning, I got a call," said Pickett. "I was surprised. I wasn't expecting it either. I was just going to be here, just to come to Fan Fest. I got a surprise call. It was a good call. I came up here. It was a great day."

Pickett signed a four year deal worth a reported $28 million including $10 million in the first year according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"We have continued to talk to Ryan and his representatives and are pleased we were able to sign Ryan to this extension," said general manager Ted Thompson in a press relase. "He has been a key part of our success on defense, and we look forward to having Ryan be a part of our future in Green Bay."

As much as Thompson and the Packers organization are excited to have Pickett back in the fold for the long-term, their nose tackle is equally excited.

Both in prior interviews and in meeting with the media at Lambeau Field, Pickett has expressed how much he loves Green Bay and wanted to come to a long term deal.

"It means a lot," said Pickett. "I love playing here. I love being a part of the Packers team. The organization is first class, and my family is here and my kids are in school."

The Packers placed the franchise tag on Pickett in late February. He didn't know how to react when it initially happened. First he was excited but admitted to mixed feelings. He was informed by the Packers that they were only doing it to get a deal done.

The deal got done. But one thing is for sure, Pickett didn't want to have to play under the one year guaranteed contract the franchise tag brings.

"With all my heart, I didn't want it," said Pickett. "I wanted to be here a long time. This is a place where I'd like to play and retire."

Heading into his tenth year in the NFL, there's a good chance Pickett will retire as a Packer with a four-year deal now in hand.

Green Bay Packers flip-flip Ryan Pickett, B.J. Raji on defensive line

The Green Bay Packers have decided to move Pickett to left defensive end and Raji to nose tackle in their 3-4 base defense. The move was unveiled Wednesday during the team?s first open organized team activity practice.

The Packers also plan to play Raji and starting right defensive end Cullen Jenkins as the two down linemen in their nickel package.

Pickett, the 10th-year veteran who has played on the interior of the defensive line his entire NFL career, was hesitant about the switch when coaches first broached the subject with him before the OTAs.

?At first, I was like, ?Ah, I don?t like it,? but then I started thinking they?re right,? Pickett said after Wednesday?s practice. ?I can actually play either one, and I think B.J. will be a great nose. ? I thought about it, and I said, ?All right, it?s cool. I?ll do whatever I can to help the team.? So that?s why I?m at end.?

Pickett making the best of moving to end

"Who am I to (question the move), you know? Obviously, B.J. is a good nose and I can play the end. To help, the team I will play end." - Ryan Pickett, on moving from nose tackle to end this season.
Former nose tackle helps make Packers line one of biggest in league
Mark Hoffman

Ryan Pickett is no Albert Haynesworth.

But he wasn't happy either.

When the Green Bay Packers coaching staff decided to move Pickett out of the one position he has played since 1998, he wondered who had spiked their coffee.

"I liked the nose," said Pickett. "I got comfortable there."

For the last four years, Pickett had been Green Bay's run-stuffing, block-absorbing nose tackle. Nose tackle had been 'Pick's' spot for nine years in the NFL and three before that at Ohio State. He has been reliable, relatively injury-free and a wall of brute strength and force that every center had to try to contain.

But the coaches had to find a way to get last year's first-round draft pick, B.J. Raji, on the field, and that means putting him at nose, his best spot. By promoting Raji to starting nose, they had to slide Pickett to left defensive end this summer.

Pickett made the move without ever questioning the sanity of the coaches or worse.

"Who am I to, you know?" said Pickett. "It was best for the team for me to play end. Obviously, B.J. is a good nose and I can play the end. To help, the team I will play end."

He's playing great. Opposite Cullen Jenkins, he's been solid in the pass and stable as ever against the run, even while given a limited number of practice repetitions there. And when he's taken all the reps he's held up. He's made tackles, and he's chased down quarterbacks.

"It took me awhile to accept it. I was disappointed for a little while," said Pickett. "But after that, I started playing it and started liking it."
