COLUMBUS — Ohio State fifth-year senior Quinn Pitcock believes he's ready to embrace his role as captain, although he needed a few seasons to get there.
"Coming in as a freshman, you're new to everything — a new city, new coaches. Your family's not around," he said. "I was quiet. I did my work and stuck to myself.
"Over the years, I've become more comfortable. It's just becoming older and more wise. I'm more vocal as a person and have better relationships, not just with the defensive line but all across the team."
The defensive tackle from Piqua was named a co-captain Friday, marking the third straight year that a player from the Dayton area has received that honor. Quarterback Troy Smith, center Doug Datish and defensive tackle David Patterson also were selected in a vote by team members.
Centerville grad A.J. Hawk and Alter grad Nick Mangold were named captains last season. Mike Nugent, a Centerville native, was chosen in 2004.
Pitcock is in his third year as a starter, and the four captains have played in a combined 128 games.
"The biggest thing I've learned in my five years here is that there's already so much history with the school academically and through football," Pitcock said. "I'm minute compared to all the tradition that's been here. I just want to leave my little chapter and let it be known that I'm going to follow in the same great footsteps of everyone else who was here."
