DT Quinn Pitcock (official thread)

July 28, 2008
Monday scribbles

It may be time to ask for suggested headlines. Mine are getting weak. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't have plenty to write about. It's just that the subjects are all over the map, so we'll just stick with scribbles today.

Here's what crossed the pad this morning:

* The buzz about second-year DT Quinn Pitcock can't be ignored anymore, especially after bloggers e-mail me and ask what's up. Fact is, Pitcock isn't in camp. He did not report. Colts coach Tony Dungy didn't tell us anything new today. He just said it was a personal situation. I HATE (notice the capital letters) to get into rumors and mentioning unsubstantiated stuff off the Internet, but I'm the messenger on this and it could be true. There's a report out there that Pitcock has lost his desire to play. This would be a blow to the Colts, who appeared set with a strong four-man rotation at defensive tackle. As you know, I'm usually up on the Ohio State guys, so his absence comes as somewhat of a shock. Maybe it's pointless, but I hope to see the guy back with the team. He came across as a good guy. You can never have enough of those men in a locker room. But, of course, most will see this as Buckeye bias.

Colts defensive lineman missing from camp
Pitcock dealing with some 'personal things'
By Mike Chappell
Posted: July 29, 2008

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- While much of the focus at the Indianapolis Colts' training camp has been on big-name players recovering from injuries, the absence of a lesser name has quietly added to the team's uncertainty.

Quinn Pitcock, expected to play a significant role in the defensive tackle rotation, had not reported to camp as of late Monday. The 2007 third-round draft pick out of Ohio State is on the "reserve/did not report'' list.

"He's going through some personal things,'' coach Tony Dungy said. "He's going to let us know when he can be back.''

Pitcock, 24, could not be reached for comment. Neither Dungy nor Pitcock's agent, Brad Leshnock, chose to address speculation on an NFL-related Web site that Pitcock has lost the desire to play. Dungy said Pitcock participated in the offseason conditioning program without issue.

Colts second-year DT Pitcock retires
July 29, 2008
Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky

Colts defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock, who had not joined the team since it reported to training camp last Thursday, has decided to end his playing career.
His agent, Brad Leshnock, sent this comment by e-mail a little while ago:

"After much deliberation and careful thought, Quinn resolved to retire from the NFL. He notified the Colts of this decision last week. Quinn is grateful for the opportunity the Colts gave him, and he wishes his teammates and the whole organization nothing but the best going forward."

Pitcock was a third-round draft pick, 98th overall, out of Ohio State in 2007. He started one game and played in nine as a rookie last year.

The Indianapolis Star posted this story about him Tuesday in which Tony Dungy said Pitcock was dealing with some personal issues and would let the team know when he could be back.

He was expected to factor into the team's defensive line rotation this season.

Colts' Pitcock Calls It Quits After One Season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Quinn Pitcock spent a lifetime preparing to play pro football.
It took one year in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts for Pitcock to decide he wanted to do something else. The defensive tackle has decided to retire at age 24.
"After much deliberation and careful thought, Quinn resolved to retire from the NFL," agent Brad Leshnock said in an e-mail confirming Pitcock's decision.
Leshnock said Pitcock informed team officials of his intentions last week.
The former Ohio State player did not report with the rest of the Colts to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology last Thursday and was placed on the Colts' did not report list.
The move still surprised the Colts, who expected the 2007 third-round pick to be a contributor in their regular defensive line rotation behind starting tackles Ed Johnson and Keyunta Dawson.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock has retired, according to his agent.

The announcement ended a week of uncertainty regarding the team?s 2007 third-round draft pick.

?After much deliberation and careful thought, Quinn resolved to retire from the NFL,?? Brad Leshnock, Pitcock?s agent, said in an email to The Star late Tuesday. ?He notified the Colts of this decision last week.

?Quinn is grateful for the opportunity the Colts gave him, and he wishes his teammates and the whole organization nothing but the best going forward.??

Pitcock, 24, could not immediately be reached for comment. He was placed on the NFL?s reserve/did not report list when he failed to show up with the teammates last Thursday for the start of training camp. He appeared in nine games as a rookie, one as a starter.

He was expected to play an important role in the Colts' defensive line rotation this year, backing up likely starting tackles Ed Johnson and Keyunta Dawson.
Wow. Just catching word of this, its been a busy week for me so Im runnin slow on updates. Wow, simply...wow....

The Colts message boards went crazy over this, so it just goes to show how much promise and talent this guy has. Oh well, maybe playing football isn't important, but coaching might be? He seemed to enjoy his time at his old college mates Ohio camps. Depending upon his degree, he could be suited for a high school coach or work his way up on the OSU staff? The kid will have endless posibilities for his future. Best of luck to him.

NFL: Ex-Buckeye retires after one season
Thursday, July 31, 2008 From staff and wire reports
Dispatch coverage

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Quinn Pitcock spent a lifetime preparing to play pro football.

"We want to leave the door open for him because I have been aware of people changing their minds," Dungy said. "We told him to take as much time as he needed."

"I always thought that he was going to pursue football for a very long time," senior defensive tackle Nader Abdallah said. "I guess some things came up in his life which I can't speak for, but since I've known him, he's always been about football, and just to hear that is extremely shocking."

Linebacker James Laurinaitis decided to return to Ohio State for his senior season rather than play in the NFL.

"Pro football players put in a lot of work, and if you're not totally focused on it, it would be hard to keep on going with it," he said.

Hopefully this is just a personal decision and not one that was caused by other circumstances. Regardless, best of luck to him.

I remember running into him last year before the draft, talking of the NFL........he didn't seem all that excited. Not to read too much into it but......who knows?
