Roster Breakdown -- DefensePosted by Frank Hughes @ 05:15:44 pm Defense

Defensive ends
In: Patrick Kerney, Bryce Fisher, Darryl Tapp, Baraka Atkins
Longshots: Nu?u Tafisi, Brandon Green
Comment: This position is set.

Defensive tackles
In: Rocky Bernard, Chuck Darby, Brandon Mebane
On the bubble: Russell Davis, Craig Terrill, Marcus Green, Marcus Tubbs
Longshot: Eric Taylor

Comment: Marcus Tubbs? knee injury on Thursday means he is likely headed for injured reserve, opening a spot for somebody else. Terrill is the best pass-rusher but without Tubbs it needs a run-stopper. Davis? age could factor in.

Marcus Green, football (2002-05)
On his reasons for returning to Ohio State

?I was trying to get my degree for a couple of years because the fact that I never finished was hanging over my head. Plus, my mother ? she was definitely an influence on me. Both my parents have master?s degrees.

Getting a degree was always important to me and when I wasn?t able to finish up before leaving for the NFL it was a tragic situation for me. I always wanted to come back and finish up.

I was here five years as a student-athlete because I redshirted my freshman season so when I left, I only had four hours to complete so that?s what I?m here to do.

For two years, coaches in the football program were calling me during the offseason encouraging me to come back and finish up school. I knew in the back of my mind I was going to come back because I knew I couldn?t play football forever.

I?ll be finishing with a degree in consumer affairs and there is a wide array of careers I would like to get into like real estate and maybe even open a restaurant, like my boy here (pointing and smiling at Wiley).?

Green last played for the NFL?s Seattle Seahawks. He was with the team in 2006, when Seattle played Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XV.

Getting real

Defensive tackle Marcus Green will keep his Ohio State connection when his younger brother, Justin, joins the Buckeyes as a freshman next season.

Green, formerly with the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints, says now that "football's done."

Thursday, he was in San Antonio preparing to watch Justin in Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but he has kept busy by starting a commercial real estate company in Columbus.

"It was kind of by accident," Green said of the job. "I still don't really know what it is I want to do, but this is something kind of like football, that I happen to be pretty good at, and it's kind of the next stage of what I can do."

He'll really be into the Buckeyes next season, but for now, he's rooting for an '06 repeat.
