DT Johnathan "Big Hank" Hankins (Dallas Cowboys)

Big Hank impresses

Boren admits he didn't think much of Johnathan Hankins when the freshman defensive lineman reported to campus this summer. Apparently, the 6-foot-3, 335-pounder didn't pass the eye test.

But Hankins has earned the respect of his new teammates and coaches. He has elevated himself to the regular rotation on the defensive interior along with backups Garrett Goebel and Adam Bellamy. That trio will provide valuable depth behind starters Dexter Larimore and John Simon.

"When he first got here, I was like, ?Dang, that's a big dude,' " Boren said. "When I first saw him I said, ?This guys' not going to be able to do one gasser.' He went out and ran seven or eight. I was impressed."

Homan said Hankins is "the kind of tackle you want," because he can both rush the passer and plug up the running lanes.

Yeah, but they've got Richard Ash. He's a 270 lb DT. MONSTER SPACE EATER BABY.

It's been reported that Ash has "muscled' up to about 330 by the time he reported for fall camp. Trying to get Campbell and Ash in shape is likely the reason that Barwis couldn't devote more time to the Tater's physique. I think we are all going to enjoy having Big Hank in Col. the next four years.

To be honest, most great DTs never pass the "look" test-they are either undersized and quick-John Randle, Russell Maryland, Johnny Simon(hopefully he ascends to this level) or they are monstrous blobs who can do things noone that size should be able to do-Big Daddy Wilkinson, Cortez Kennedy, Casey Hampton, Vince Wilfork. Hopefully we have a stealin the later category w/ Hankins. So far, so good.

Funny, I remember a comment that John Cooper made about a DL recruit in the 1989 incoming freshman class: "Alonzo Spellman sure passes the look test".

They also asked Coop about having to come up with Size 18 cleats for Spellman because his feet were so large. Coop responded that " you don't shoot a canon out of a canoe." These peak times of the last several years make drawing a few nuggetts from more frustrating times a bit more enjoyable.

Big Hank the Next Big Daddy?
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? There is big and then there is Johnathan Hankins.

On a roster full of 300-pounders, Ohio State?s freshman defensive tackle stands alone.

Despite being just 18 years old, ?Big Hank,? as he is known in Columbus, is already larger than just about all of his new college teammates.

?A big guy like that who can move off the ball is a handful,? starting right guard Bryant Browning said.

Freshman defensive tackle Jonahtan Hankins a BIG surprise in OSU camp.

All these reports out of camp can't possibly be right. He was only a 3-star!!!

You'd think that offers from tOSU, Alabama, Florida, and Oklahoma would have caused those services to adjust that rating, wouldn't you?

I notice that Rivals and the YouTube video (along with this thread) use the spelling JohnathOn. The other links seem to use JohnathAn. Which is correct?

There's still confusion on this. At this point, the official site is listing 'than', and more articles are using that spelling, so it looks like we'll go with that until we see something directly from him (I'm not counting the facebook entry with 'than').
